Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to know a brief history of their experience and their horse's experience and then will ask them their goals. Each horse and rider are unique and require an individualized approach.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 30 years of experience working with horses starting with a bachelor's degree in Equestrian Studies from the University of Findlay. In addition, I am an USEF licensed judge in Hunters, Equitation, and Jumpers. Along with my work experience at UF in many capacities, I have ridden with many top trainers in dressage, eventing, and hunter/jumpers over the years such as Denny Emerson, George Morris, Michael Page, Bernie Traurig, Kalman deJurenak, and David O'Connor. My competition experience includes shows and events sanctioned by USHJA, USEA, USDF, as well as numerous local and state organizations.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$50/Private Lesson or $40/Group Lesson. If travel is more than 10 miles, there is an additional traveling charge. Training rides are $50/ride.
How did you get started teaching?
I have been blessed and teaching has always come naturally to me as I love people and sharing my passion with them. Teaching started for me while in college and I haven't stopped.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all levels of student from beginner to advanced and ages 3-70. Their goals have varied greatly from competitive showing to developing a closer partnership with their horse or my lesson horses while enjoying the learning process.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One occasion recently was teaching one of my young students how to canter for the first time and enjoying the huge smile on her face. Always exciting! Another event occured when one of my jumping students said with wonder and amazement "that's the biggest jump I have ever jumped!"
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Finding a teacher that you "click" with is important. Talking with them and watching a lesson when possible will help to observe their teaching style and learn their personality. Other important attributes include being positive, patient, and sincere. Another trait to look for is the ability to communicate an idea in many different ways. Each person is a unique individual with different learning styles. An effective teacher will be flexible and adapt accordingly. Finally, evaluate the teacher's experiences and qualifications so you feel confident they can help you advance toward your goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do you want to take lessons? What are your short-term and long-term goals (the teacher can help with these areas also)? What are your strengths and weaknesses when riding or working with horses and in general?
