As an adult learning the art of riding for the first time in my life it has been a challenge for myself and my instructor to overcome a lifetime of bad riding. All the instinctive things you do as a rider are ingrained and take a huge conscious effort to change. Debbie has recognized that as my major obstacle and not given up on me when she has to remind me for the millionth time to put my heels down or do not move my hands out! I have fallen in love with the challenge as I see my horse progress. The amazing difference that happens when I am able to put all thousands of reminders together is my dream. I have had a lot of frustration with myself over this but I will not give up. Thank you Debbie for sticking with me! Lesson to new riders “ start young with a good instructor”. Way harder to unlearn than it is to learn right!

    Frequently asked questions

I lead the new student through getting to know how to gather the tack and equipment to ride, as well as approaching the horse and getting them ready to ride. We continue to the the arena, by learning to lead the horse and asking them to halt. We continue with the finishing detail prior to mounting, then mount and talk about position in the saddle and what to expect as the horse moves forward. Sometimes I use a longe, so that I have control of the horse, which makes the student feel more at ease right away. We continue with learning skills of working with asking the horse to move forward and stopping by using our bodies with just a bit of help from the hand. Moving forward we talk about how to navigate turns and simple transitions (walk and halt and such.) We talk consitatnly about what is happening by me asking questions and getting student feedback. We go on to finishing the ride and go into the process of putting the horse away and taking care of the tack used, so that everything is put back and ready to go for a ride the next time.
