Mikell Farm Performance Horses
About
Mikell Farm was estabilshed in 1995 with the purchase of our farm. Prior to that time Kelley had been teaching/training freelance at other farms or peoples homes. After opening for lessons in the spring of 1996 things just took off.
LESSONS
We strongly believe that the early years in horsemanship are the most important and strive to offer the best lesson horses in the area and keep our rates competitive so that riders have the opportunity to start their riding careers on the right foot. We largely cater to 4-H and open show riders. Over the years we have had students go on to compete at the rated shows including zone finals and breed shows.
It's hard to believe that 2021 marks our 26th year! Our lesson program is stronger than ever with both showing and non showing students of all ages currently 3-75.
SHOWING
In 2005 Kelley decided to concentrate on getting back into the show ring and to have a small show oriented lesson program. To support this goal, we began to purchase a few horses a year to train up and re-sell into pleasure or show homes.
Showing heavily in the last few years has earned us many achievements!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson will evaluate your skills if you have ridden before. If you are a first time rider we start at the beginning. You can expect the learn to groom and tack up a horse. Learn to lead, mount and some beginner skills while riding in your first lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching for over 30 years. I have shown at rated hunter shows, Pony Club (B), many open show wins. Successfully competing in the following areas: English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Showmanship, Horsemanship, Trail, Hunters and Eventing. My students compete at various levels with many wins and year end awards.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Please wisit our website for current pricing. www.mikellfarm.com
We do offer a limited number of group lessons for our show riders to prepare for showing with lots of horses. You must reach a level of skills to move into a group lesson.
What types of students have you worked with?
We work will all ages. Our youngest rider is 3 and we have many students in their 60's & 70's. I have had many students that come to me after having confidence issues or bad instruction in the past. We have great lesson horses that work wonders for students with these types of issues. Our clients are split about 50/50 with show riders and pleasure riders. Showing is not required to be a student with us.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Experience and reputation, along with how the horses are treated will tell you a lot about a farm. There are many inexpensive farms in the area, but you really do get what you pay for. Attend a show and see who is doing well and working well with their riders. Who looks happy is a tell tale sign!
