Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin by learning about my student's goals, experience. and current skills. Then I share my philosophy about the horse-human relationship and explain my teachng method. My goal is to create a safe comfortable environment in which my students feel successful and have a great time!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am Certified Horsemanship Association English and Western certified riding instructor. I have over 30 years experience riding, training, showing, and teaching. I have written horse training and behavior articles for national horse industry publications and websites. I am continually advancing my knowledge and education in the fields of equine biomechanics, rider biomechanics, nutrition, management, and applied equine behavioral science.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard rate is $60 per hour for horse owners and $80 per 1.5 hour private instruction when the horse and equipment are provided.
How did you get started teaching?
I began riding at a young age and quickly figured out that horses are my passion. I began by learning myself from other instructors, but found their methods uninspiring and often unfair/inhumane to the horse. I wanted to give both the horses and the humans an opportunity to have a wonderful and fulfilling shared experience.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students across the spectrum, from beginner riders to accomplished professionals. I help persons with fears/anxiety, those dealing with past unpleasent experiences, and those with problems with their horses they want to resolve. I teach those who want to improve their horsemanship skills in the saddle and on the ground. I also work with those who are interested in having the ultimate experience with horses. Some of my students are interested in the relationship, others in competition or specific discliplines, and those who simply love learning about horses.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy the clinics we hold at our farm, Lyric Valley Ranch in Santa Fe, TN. I get to meet new horse-lovin' people who are eager to learn how to be better horse people for themselves and their beloved equine friends. Those events are always fun and full of learning and sharing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I always recommend being well-informed about the philosophy and approach of your instructor or trainer. There is a lot of misinformation out there. Keep learning and seek knowledge from those who have the science and evidence to back up what they are teaching.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It's great when a student know what they want to accomplish. I think it's also important to understand that horsemanship and riding horses can be a life long endeavor. It doesn't lend itself to being a casual pastime like other hobbies or passions because it requires quite a bit of effort and committment.
