Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I offer PRIVATE, R+, lessons for ADVANCED LEVEL ADULTS, DURING THE DAY, DURING THE WEEK, on my horse.
A few questions to begin to determine if we are a good fit;
Are you available during the day, during the week?
What is your experience level? FOR MY HORSE; Please have around 200 hours in the saddle. Please have experience with R+ TRAINING. Please have trained a few animals with R+. Please have a good understanding of the 4 training quadrants.
What is the picture in your head of what you would like to see yourself doing with horses short term and also long term?
FOR MY HORSES; You must already have trained a few R+ animals AND know how to; retrieve the horse, ground handling, grooming, tacking, mounting, prep for and returning the horse to the pasture into the herd using R+ concepts.
I will ALSO come to you for LESSONS ON YOUR HORSE, no matter your experience level. ASK.
If we are working with YOUR HORSE, what do you wish to accomplish?
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a lifetime of studying with great masters, in the ways of the horse. The more I have learned, the more I wanted to learn and share. I have spent the last 10+ YEARS taking college courses in BEHAVIOR SCIENCE, R+ TRAINING, ETHOLOGY and ENRICHMENT.
I can share knowledge of ethical training, riding, teaching, day to day care, husbandry and enrichment.
While I will work with any discipline or horse type, I like the benefit of an English saddle.
I believe that the language of the horse is the same, regardless of the saddle style.
I truly cherish the magnificence of the horse! From his perspective, WHAT’S IN IT FOR THE HORSE?
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer 1 hour PRIVATE R+ lessons, pro-rated into the next hour.
How did you get started teaching?
A very long time ago, when I was a young adult, because I had a horse, the children down the street talked me into teaching them. I quickly learned how much I loved teaching and that I wanted to continue indefinitely. I was so inspired, that I went on to complete instructor seminars. From that point on, I have continued teaching and I have never ceased to learn more and more. The more I have learned, the more I wanted to learn and share. I have spent the last 10+ YEARS taking college courses in BEHAVIOR SCIENCE, R+ TRAINING, ETHOLOGY and ENRICHMENT.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have enjoyed helping all types of learners from absolute beginners to amateur or professional advanced level horse trainers and teachers.
My aim is to develop a relaxed and balanced horse, by adjusting our agenda to the horse’s needs and emotions. We hope to attain desired goals only by listening to and co-creating with the horse.
I believe that time spent around horses, being in the present “on horse time”, makes us better, more aware humans. Being with horses helps us become more calm, gentle, soft and patient.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Any time I am teaching students, how to understand what the horse needs us to know. Any time I am helping horses with their humans.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The ethical welfare of the horses and safety of the rider & horse should be the first priority of a teacher/stable.
Go meet the teacher. See the place. If possible, watch a lesson or talk to other students. How do the activities that are going on with the horses, make you feel?
Consider your expectations of a stable/teacher, as well as yourself. Be honest with yourself about what you think you want to do and to what you may actually be able to commit.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How much time do I have, to devote to learning about horses each week/month/year?
What do I want to learn? Am I willing to spend my time learning what the horse needs from us? Or do I just want to get on and RIDE?
How much disposable income do I have, to spend on learning about horses each month/year? Taking lessons weekly can run between two and four hundred a month.
