Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I visit with the student concern previous riding experiences. I choose an appropriate mount and we start with grooming and saddling. I take things slowly and allow the new rider to show me what they already know. I suggest alternate approaches that are horse-friendly. I make sure that the student and the horse match.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been riding since I was ten years old and I'm a retired school teacher. I trained my own horse along with others. I've been working with the Sam Houston Equestrian Center since 1986.

How did you get started teaching?
I taught my sisters when I was a teen. I graduated the University of Wisconsin--Green Bay in 1971 and started teaching high school. In the summers I taught riding to local kids. I came to Houston in 1986 and began working for the Sam Houston Equestrian Center.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with all ages in beginner and intermediate levels. Handicapped riders, autistic and blind riders too.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We had our Halloween Equestrian Costume Show in October. Kids dressed up and won ribbons in jumping and western wearing various costumes.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a person who can teach. Good riders are not always good teachers. Make sure that the horses are well-cared for and suitable for your level. A beginner should ride an older, quiet horse.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do I want to ride? A dream, exercise, fun, novel
Do I have a time-table? Getting ready for a trail ride?
Am I fearful? Past issues? How big is the horse.
