About
Hello! My name is Zachary Calder.
I have played the piano for almost 13 years now, and I am extremely grateful for the experiences I have had throughout those years, especially learning about all areas of music such as ear training, music theory, and music history. During my years enrolled in piano lessons, I participated in the Achievement in Music (AIM) program which tests students on their piano technique and performance skills as well as their knowledge of music theory, music history, and the extent of their musically trained hearing abilities. In 2014 I completed the final level, level 10, of the AIM program, helping me become a well-rounded musician. I am currently attending Salt Lake Community College on a piano performance scholarship.
As a teacher, I strive to provide my students with a solid musical basis that extends far beyond piano technique, so that my students can be well-prepared to succeed in all of their future musical endeavors. The well-rounded curriculum that my piano teacher led me through has proven to be invaluable as I have found myself pursuing a career in music, and I desire to provide my students with the same well-rounded curriculum. Above all, I desire to help my students discover the joy in music and to help them cultivate a better understanding and appreciation of music in general.
I look forward to making music with you!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With a new student, I introduce them to the keyboard and immediately begin working on the basics of proper piano-playing technique. I also make it a top priority to help the student learn basic music theory, especially proficiency in reading music notation. My overall goal with a new student is to build a solid foundation so he/she is better prepared for more advanced concepts in the future.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that follows a well-rounded curriculum. Knowing how to play the piano is good, but I have found that learning about music theory and history from my piano teacher has set me apart from my peers who merely learned how to read music and play it on the piano.
