Hello! I am a senior at BYU getting my BFA in art and a teaching license. I love kids and have been working with kids through tutoring, teaching, and caretaking for over five years. I have tutored students in middle school, high school, and college in math and English for two years and taught private art lessons previously for two years as well. Art is my passion, and I love helping people discover the artist in themselves. I specialize in painting, drawing, and sculpture, but I also have training in printmaking, new genre, and photography. I have a deep knowledge of art history as well as contemporary art and art practices. My classes are ab

Bruce R. says, "Shelley is an exceptional instructor. She is very knowledgeable of many techniques and artist practices. She is so enthusiastic and encouraging to students and is able to help students accomplish their artistic goals. She has a great sense of humor and puts students at ease, removing any discomfort or uncertainty in trying new things. She is great with students that are just starting out or she can challenge students that are more experienced. She draws upon her wealth of knowledge to demystify and make accessible even complex subjects. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of receiving instruction and watching her demonstrate new techniques. I highly recommend her as your next drawing or painting teacher." Read more

There's a striking different between lessons from a formal educational setting and the professional market. Having experienced both, I can offer insights that will help the aspiring artist to bridge what they learn from a lesson to real-life applications. Even art hobbyists can benefit from the techniques freelancers use to solve problems and express ideas with streamlined creative processes. In truth I am a storyteller who knows how to draw, creating stories and helping others tell theirs is a thrill I can't fully describe....

I've been a professional artist for 22 years, teaching for 10 years, and loving art my whole life. I have experience in painting with just about every medium, sculpting, graphic design, and drawing. I can articulate the subtleties of fine technique while still allowing for expressive freedom and exploration. I'm patient, kind, and way more fun than Bob Ross--RIP buddy! Come with your own project, or jump into my weekly challenge!

I have been teaching oil painting and drawing for 39+ years. I graduated in art from BYU and attended their MFA program for drawing and painting and taught as a graduate student and part time faculty. I have taught privately for various age groups from 18 to 90. I acutally had a 90 year old student two different times. I work with each student individually because everyone seems to need different things and are in different levels. check me out on steveparsonsart.com...

I’ve been doing art since I was a young child. I have my degree from Brigham Young University in art education. I’m retired from teaching art in a school for trouble teens and was able to help my students in many ways through art, to include helping them to discover and develop their artistic and creativity abilities. I teach ceramics, hand building with clay, at the Lehi art center. They learn to create with pinch method, coil, slab and hand sculpture. Their projects are finished with glaze and ready to take home at the end of the ten weeks (meeting once a week). I am also experience in teaching all other forms of art.

Your Painting Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do painting classes cost?

Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.

Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.

How long are painting classes?

Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.

What kind of painting class is best for beginners?

Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.

Where can I take painting classes?

You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.

What do I bring to painting classes?

Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:

  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Easel
  • Canvas
  • Apron

  • How long have you been painting?
  • Do you allow walk-ins?
  • What type of paint would you recommend for my experience level?
  • What's your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have an age requirement?
  • How long are your classes?
  • Can I take my work home after class, or does it need to stay here to dry?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?
