Dana L. says, "I’ve been studying classical guitar with William (at his location) for about 6 months. Initially, he helped me find an instrument that would meet my needs and taught me how to care for it. I’d call him a connoisseur of classical acoustic guitars! He knows how they should sound and has valuable guidance to provide for beginning guitarists like me who may not be as able to see or hear the differences. I’m glad I got his advice before making a commitment / investment on a particular instrument. I am 46 and have a musical background (I already play both piano and trombone). William has very effectively adapted his teaching to fit with the skills I already have. In some cases that means speeding up and in other cases going back to basics to make sure I have the fundamentals down. His knowledge of music and musical instruments enables him to very effectively describe to experienced musicians how the guitar is different from what they are used to and what they’ll need to pay attention to. William has been very focused on the details of correct technique, preferring to slow down and work specific things rather than moving on or cutting corners for the sake of getting through the method materials. If you want to learn how to play completely, correctly, efficiently and without hurting yourself William is your teacher. One of the things I appreciate the most is William’s patience. He’s a stickler for correct technique so he doesn’t let errors slide, but he corrects in a way that is both helpful and encouraging. There’s no bit of guidance that he’s given me that, when I put it into practice, doesn’t dramatically help my progress. I’ve learned in a very short time to really listen to him. He knows what he’s talking about. I can wholeheartedly recommend William to anyone wanting to learn to play guitar. He’s one of the best music instructors I’ve ever had! I’m happy to answer anyone’s questions on my experiences with William or this review." Read more

Mike S. says, "Matt has been my guitar teacher over the past year and his help has been very significant in my improvement as a guitar player. Matt has helped me through multiple songs such as the Allman Brothers version of “Stormy Monday”, “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi and Led Zeppelins “Gallows Pole”. More importantly Matt has definitely improved my rhythm playing as well as my ability to play solos. He has also taught me about the role of the guitar player in a band and relates that role to rhythm, chords and solos that are played. He provided a structure that helped me better learn the fret board. Matt is very competent with music theory and conveys what is necessary for the student to be more competent and further enjoy playing guitar. At each of our lessons Matt demonstrates his expertise in music and guitar. Additionally, and important to me, is that Matt represents and conducts himself in a polite and professional manner. He is easy and fun to work with and cares about the success of his students." Read more

I've been playing guitar and writing songs for almost 40 years. My music styles include blues, folk, rock, pop, country and jazz. I'm also the Director of a start up Chapel Band so playing spiritual songs is another of my music styles including OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART LORD and PEOPLE GET READY. It all starts with playing music for the sake of playing music because music will always be an expression of the human spirit.

Your electric guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do electric guitar lessons cost near me?

Electric guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session with lengths of 30 to 60 minutes each. Private tuition costs $45 to $70 per hour, while group sessions are more wallet-friendly at $25 to $35 per class.

  • For ongoing classes, you'll pay $170 to $315 per month with the prepaid discount.
  • Online lessons cost anywhere from $35 to $55 per hour and let you jam with a teacher from the comfort of your own home.

Are electric guitar lessons worth it?

Electric guitar lessons are worth it if you want to learn more at a faster pace, develop a better technique, and get customized instructions to improve your style. Only an experienced electric guitar player can understand how to help you improve, so don't settle for a general guitar instructor.

What age is good to start electric guitar lessons?

A good age for kids to start electric guitar lessons is from 6 to 10 years old. Another indication they're ready to learn is whenever they're physically able to hold the guitar and have the hand strength to press the strings.

Adults of all ages can also start electric guitar lessons at any time. With the right guidance and consistent practice, anyone can master the electric guitar.

How many lessons does it take to learn electric guitar?

The number of lessons it takes you to learn electric guitar depends on your goals and how much time you dedicate to practicing those epic solos. Playing a simple tune might take 2 to 6 months of weekly classes.

If you're aiming to rock out like a pro, expect a time investment of 4 to 10 years.

Are acoustic and electric guitar lessons the same?

Acoustic and electric guitar lessons aren't the same because these are two entirely different instruments with unique equipment features.

Learning to play electric guitar requires:

  • Knowing how to use an amplifier and pedals that create sound effects
  • Understanding how to adjust the speaker connection
  • Knowledge of genres like rock, metal, blues, and jazz
  • Special techniques like power chords, palm muting, and string bending

Learning to play an acoustic guitar means you focus on classical, folk, country, pop, or blues music. A pick is optional in acoustic lessons, and you don't need amplifiers or cables. Acoustic teachers also place more emphasis on fingerpicking patterns.

How do I find the best electric guitar lessons near me?

You can find the best electric guitar lessons nearby to suit your needs by checking out our teacher listings her on the Lessons website. Your local music stores are also great places to start when scouting for the best guitar instructors.

Before making a decision, you should:

  • Compare prices from 3 different teachers and ask what their lessons include.
  • Check out their reviews on Google and Lessons.
  • Request for a references list of past students to verify their track record.
  • Ask for opinions from other parents on what their kids think of the teacher.
  • Obtain a written schedule and contract before the first lesson.
  • Pay for a couple of sessions to see what you think before fully committing to a month's worth of lessons.

What questions do I ask when choosing an electric guitar teacher?

Ask potential electric guitar teacher these questions before hiring:

  • Did you study music in school, and what qualifications did you earn?
  • How long have you been teaching electric guitar?
  • Can I sample a lesson to gauge if your teaching style suits me?
  • What's the average age of your students?
  • What type of electric guitar would you recommend for me?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much practice should I put in?
  • What resources or books would you recommend for learning electric guitar?
  • Can you adapt your teaching methodology if I'm struggling with a concept?
  • What should I bring to class, and how long does each session last?
  • Could I get a copy of our timetable and contract terms?
  • What's your policy regarding missed classes due to unforeseen circumstances?
  • Can I choose some songs that I'd love to learn?

I am 48 years old and started taking lessons from William a few months ago. William is very patient and thorough. I have learned more in these few months than I have in all the years I have been trying to teach myself. I would highly recommend William if you are looking for a guitar instructor, regardless of your background or specific music style interest.
