Alison J. says, "I can’t recommend Ascend and Defend Academy enough! I came in as a complete beginner, just looking to learn how to protect myself when I’m out with my 12-month-old. The environment was welcoming, and the training was broken down in a way that felt easy to understand and actually fun. I really appreciate how patient and encouraging the instruction was too. I’m very shy, but I had fun. Definitely a place where beginners like me can feel comfortable while still being challenged." Read more

Your tai chi chuan questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do Tai Chi classes cost?

Tai Chi classes cost $60 to $150 per month, depending on the school, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional marital arts dojos, and some local parks offer free classes.

Many schools offer individual drop-in classes for $15 to $25 each. A drop-in class provides you with the perfect opportunity to evaluate the school and instructors to make sure they're a good fit for you before signing a membership contract.

Online Tai Chi classes cost $15 to $50 per month for unlimited access. However, you may benefit more by taking some in-person classes first to ensure you're practicing with the correct form.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is a noncompetitive martial arts practice that incorporates continuous flowing movements, controlled breathing, and meditative awareness. Because it is a mind-body exercise, Tai Chi is often referred to as "meditation in motion" and is known for its mental and physical health benefits.

Tai Chi – also called T'ai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, or Tai Ji Quan – originated in China in the 12th century as a system of exercise and self-defense.

What are the benefits of Tai Chi?

Tai Chi provides a variety of mental and physical benefits, including:

  • Improved balance and mobility
  • Increased flexibility
  • Less pain and stiffness
  • Improved sense of well-being
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased concentration and awareness

Tai Chi has also been proven to lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular fitness, relieve arthritis pain, and prevent falls.

What to wear for Tai Chi?

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to practice Tai Chi. Choose clothes made from breathable fabrics to prevent overheating. Tai Chi involves many slow reaching and turning movements, so clothing that allows you to move freely is ideal.

Wear lightweight, flexible, thin-soled shoes or go barefoot. Avoid sneakers with thick soles or treads that may snag on the floor or restrict ankle flexibility.

Bring a reusable water bottle, especially if practicing outdoors.

How can I find Tai Chi classes near me?

When evaluating Tai Chi schools near you, follow these guidelines:

  • Compare membership packages from multiple schools.
  • Read school and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Visit the school to confirm it's clean and well-maintained.
  • Take advantage of a drop-in class to ensure the school and instructor are a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask Tai Chi instructors?

Ask these questions to ensure you find the best Tai Chi school for you:

  • How long have you been teaching Tai Chi?
  • What membership plans do you offer, and how much do they cost?
  • Do you offer a free or discounted trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Are your classes beginner-friendly?
  • Are your classes more wellness-oriented or martial arts-oriented?
  • How many people are in a typical class?
  • How long does each class last?
  • What should I wear to class?

I have been training in self defense with Henry Nguyen for over 2 months now racking up over 15 one hour sessions and I have learned a lot from our time. My schedule is a little crazy (working 15hours/day) so for me finding someone to work with my schedule was a little challenging but when I first talked to Henry he was very understanding to my schedule and was willing on seeing me 2 times a week from 8:30pm to 9:30pm at my house. Henry is extremely passionate about teaching self defense and if you ever ask him a question he does not know how to answer, you can expect a text the next morning answering your question in detail. I enjoy the session with him and will be continuing to have more
