Rameez S. says, "Marshal is a great teacher. My son is getting home lessons and I am quite happy with his progress. Marshal understands my child and tries new techniques at his level. Marshal listens to my child and talks to him which makes it easier for him to learn. Marshal is a decent man who talks less but makes sure he is working hard. Would definitely recommend him!" Vishank J. says, "I studied composition with Dr. Alden Jenks for four years, taking weekly private lessons with him. After this considerable length of time, I can say with confidence that Dr. Jenks is one of the kindest, most knowledgeable teachers I have ever had. His most salient strength is his deep knowledge of music, both Western Classical and other genres, driven by his passion for finding new motifs and sounds to inspire future compositions. Not only is Dr. Jenks a master of his craft, he is also a gifted instructor, with abundant patience and eagerness to guide the student into growing his or her own musical ideas to fruition. Our lessons would typically consist of me presenting the progression of my composition over the week, and an intriguing ensuing discussion of further possibilities, with frequent immersion into pertinent musical masterpieces, history and culture. Any student of Dr. Jenks will be sure to improve their composition ability, both through guided practice, and grounded in a musical lore necessary to broaden one’s musical thinking. In addition, by conversing with Dr. Jenks regularly and following his guidance through the vast musical landscape, any student will find his or her overall musical appreciation and knowledge broadening exponentially, and through regular inspiration by the great works, will feel continually replenishing enthusiasm to create music of his or her own. I also cannot overemphasize the positive impact of Dr. Jenks’ warm, welcoming, patient personality on the ambiance of our lessons together, which was essential for me to erase my fear of trying new musical ideas, in service of creativity. For me, Dr. Jenks’ lessons were life-changing, and though I am not a musician, a large part of my present love and appreciation of music is derived from our four years of experiences together. I strongly recommend Dr. Jenks to any prospective student." Read more

Janice M. says, "Trent is a very patient and positive teacher. Our 13 year old son has been taking lessons for about a year and he has progressed well and enjoys his sessions with Trent, which says a lot if you know the mind of a 13 year old! He has even managed to pivot quickly and offer motivating zoom lessons when SIP was instituted. I highly recommend Trent. " Read more

Reviews for San Francisco music theory teachers

Recent success stories from people in the San Francisco area.
Nicole S.
Marshal is not only a gifted musician but also highly skilled at teaching. Marshal infuses music theory into his lessons, helping me understand the meaning behind the notes. He also uses personalized techniques to help with proper hand placement and reading sheet music. As an adult student, I was nervous about picking up an instrument but Marshal customized his curriculum to my learning style, characteristics and ability, making my journey with the piano an enjoyable yet challenging experience! I've been working with Marshal for only a few months and I've made great strides in my ability to both read sheet music and play the piano. He's also very patient and highly personable! I highly recommend working with Marshal. Very excited for my future lessons and continued piano skills growth!

**Simpler and Honest Review:** John Ferguson is a great piano teacher for both kids and adults. He’s patient, professional, and makes lessons fun while still helping you improve. What I really like is how he adjusts his teaching to fit each student’s needs—whether you’re a beginner or getting back into piano after a long break. He makes learning comfortable and enjoyable. His lessons mix technique, theory, and creativity, focusing on understanding music rather than just memorizing notes. He also keeps students motivated by exploring different styles, offering performance chances (if you want them), and celebrating progress. John truly cares about his students, and it shows in his teaching. If you’re looking for a skilled and supportive piano teacher, I highly recommend him!

Aaron has helped me a lot. Especially improving my left hand capabilities. He is familiar with many different styles of music. He is also very good at figuring out how to play pieces that were not written for accordion.

Jonathan is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the guitar. He takes his time explaining and breaking concepts down and has always worked with me to meet my specific needs. I have tried lessons with other people before, and by far Jonathan has been the best experience I have ever had with a guitar instructor. I have now been taking lessons for a year and a half and am grateful for every single moment.
