Lewis S. says, "I have studied Bulgarian and Macedonian style tambura (guitar-like folk instruments) with Bill Cope, off and on, for about 30 years. I have had private lessons in his home and I have been in group classes at various folk music and dance camps, most often the Mendocino Balkan Music and Dance Camp. For his classes at music camps Bill always arrives with charts prepared for both the students who can read music and with tablature for those students that cannot. He is careful to show how to care for the instrument and he is rigorous on showing the correct hand movement and positions unique to the folk style. He has planned out the sequence of skills necessary to start and improve one’s ability to play in the folk repertoire and style. When I have worked with him in a private setting he has been very generous with his time and talent to prepare notes for tunes I have requested and has also helped me find the chords for tunes I am learning. Bill’s repertoire includes material from simple folk songs for the beginner to advanced concert pieces for the virtuoso filled with the interesting ornaments that are characteristic of these styles. I have been present when Bill was accompanying performers and bands from Macedonia and Bulgaria and I have danced to the music of his own bands at performances and parties. " Read more

Elias R. says, "I’ve been a student of Chris’s for going on 2 years! When I first started off with Chris I had very little understanding of lead guitar and a lot of rhythm guitar. Now I have a much better grasp on the concepts of lead and rhythm guitar. Over the last 2 years I’ve been able to learn loads of songs from my favorite guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, and John Mayer. Not only has he taught me how to play their material, he has also taught me the techniques they use and how to apply them to my own style of playing. Without a doubt Chris knows his material and can play literally everything. He’s given me plenty of tools to become a successful guitarist and he’s taught me that in order to become a good guitarist you have to be willing to put in the work! Chris has also been very flexible over the last few years with my work and school schedule which has really helped me fit my passion for guitar into my normal busy life. You won’t regret having him as a teacher. The lessons are awesome especially if you ask a lot of questions and present him with the type of music you want to learn! " Read more

Your acoustic guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do acoustic guitar lessons cost near me?

Most acoustic guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for 30 to 60 minutes. Private class prices are $45 to $70 per hour and give students the most attention. Group guitar lessons cost $25 to $35 per session for a collaborative learning environment with less personal attention.

Subscriptions for ongoing lessons are available from $170 to $315 per month.

Are acoustic guitar lessons worth it?

Acoustic guitar lessons are worth it because the structured teaching style motivates students and enhances faster progress. A private instructor also helps to prevent the development of poor techniques common in self-taught musicians.

What age is good to start acoustic guitar lessons?

You can start acoustic guitar lessons for children from ages 6 to 10 years old while adults can start lessons at any age. The journey of mastering the guitar is dependent on your dedication to practice and your teacher's qualifications.

How many acoustic guitar lessons do I need?

The amount of acoustic guitar lessons you need will depend on what you want to accomplish and how frequently you practice. Learning a simple song takes 2 to 6 months on average. However, mastering the guitar like a professional musician takes 4 to 10 years.

Is there a difference between electric and acoustic guitar lessons?

There are many differences between electric and acoustic guitar lessons because these instruments have unique features.

An electric guitar requires you to learn:

  • How to use an amplifier
  • How to work with effects and foot pedals
  • What makes a wide range of sounds for rock, metal, blues, or jazz
  • Techniques like power chords, palm muting, and note bending

However, learning to play an acoustic guitar is simpler because it doesn't connect to amplifiers or cables. Acoustic guitar playing uses different finger techniques to make a resonant sound suitable for folk, country, pop, and blues music.

How do I find the best acoustic guitar lessons near me?

To find the most suitable acoustic guitar lessons, you can peruse the list of nearby teachers here on the Lessons website. Also, don't overlook the potential of local music stores for guitar lessons.

Before settling on a guitar teacher, it's crucial to:

  • Review the prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Examine reviews about them on Google and Lessons.
  • Ask for references from other students they've taught.
  • Consult with other parents to gauge their children's experience with the teacher.
  • Get a written schedule and contract prior to the first lesson.
  • Evaluate the teacher's compatibility before signing up for a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing an acoustic guitar teacher?

To choose the best acoustic guitar teacher, it helps to pose these questions:

  • What music-related degrees do you have?
  • Is there an option for a complimentary first session to see if we're a good fit?
  • What is the extent of your experience in teaching guitar?
  • Which type of acoustic guitar would be most appropriate for me to practice on?
  • What's the average age range of your student base?
  • Will you assign finger drills for me to practice outside of lessons?
  • How much independent practice do you recommend between classes?
  • Which specific textbooks should I get?
  • How many styles of guitar music can you teach?
  • Could you adjust your instructional methods if I'm having difficulties?
  • What should I bring to our classes?
  • How long is each session?
  • Could I get a copy of our class timetable, agreement, and terms of payment?
  • What is your protocol to cancel a class due to an unforeseen circumstance?
  • Is there flexibility to add some of my favorite songs into the curriculum?

Ahmad is an easy going teacher who kicks my butt at the same time. He's a stickler for the foundational elements, which is exactly what I need to take my guitar playing to the next level. He is truly interested in seeing me improve. I'm a songwriter and I need to up my game to be able to hang with co-writers who are more advanced musically, and I also have the goal to play out at writers rounds and open mics and I need to get a little more proficient for that. We're playing acoustic. We've done both Skype and in-person lessons. Highly recommended. Good location.

In the course of a year Ben has introduced me to a variety of ukulele playing techniques (strumming patterns, fingering, muting, hammer-ons, hammer-offs, overtones, slides, pinching etc.) some of which I've been able to learn and execute with some proficiency. He's also taught me how to look at sheet music and puzzle out for myself fingering for melodies and chord fragments based on the chord structures to which these melodies and chord fragments are associated. In this time I've gone from being a nearly 60-year old complete beginner to being someone able to competently play melody and/or chord lines for the following songs "Fly Me to the Moon", "Walk Don't Run", "Sounds of Silence", "Kawika", "The Entertainer", "Hide Away", "Crazy", "Sweet Lelani", "Tears on My Pillow", "Behind Blue Eyes" "Breakdown", "Killing Me Softly" "White Christmas", "Mele Kalikimaka" "Vietnam", and some others.

I have been taking piano lessons with Maureen at ride music studio since almost a year.Maureen follows simplymusic technique to teach piano.I have learnt lot of songs with her so far and still learning more.Maureen is very patient when it comes to teaching and she always has a plan in mind about what all things to teach within 45 minutes class. She also arranges lot of events like playing at senior living homes, jam sessions, etc which I feel is really exciting.I would definitely recommend ride music studio if you want to enjoy playing piano and not just follow the coursework.

I have worked with Bill in classes and one-on-one. The experience is always rewarding. I have been working on Macedonian Tambura - a guitar or lute-like instrument. I have heard Bill play multiple instruments in multiple bands; truly, too many to count. He is a master musician and a master of theory. His knowledge extends beyond playing music from all over the world, to knowing the background of that music and how it is constructed. Amazing practical knowledge, technical knowledge and teaching ability. I highly recommend Bill Cope.
