My teaching approach: When I started taking lessons at the age of 9, my teachers only wanted to teach me songs and music that THEY liked and I almost quit because of it. As a result, I am dedicated to teaching my students the music that THEY love and I use that music to help them understand the fundamentals of music theory and guitar technique. My belief is that music has to be fun as well as educational. I am currently offering online lessons only. You can learn from the comfort of your own home with one-on-one live video lessons! Getting There Guitar

Getting There Guitar

I am a great learner. I believe I am a great teacher. I had to do it on my own and I would love to teach beginner level students how to play the guitar in ways it makes sense for them. Centuries ago Shakespeare once wrote "if music be the food of love, play on." This is how I feel about music and especially playing the guitar. Once you understand the basics of guitar playing, it is easy to accelerate to intermediate level. And you will absolutely love guitar playing and making music. I believe I can teach you the tricks to get over the entry level humps. ... View Profile

San Jose Guitar Instruction

Phil Vargas · San Jose, CA

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

I grew up during the era of the Beatles! Their music was so interesting, that I began to study guitar more in depth. As I learned more chord progressions, I began showing friends and I became good at it. Later, I started reading music and it helped me be a better musician.

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy seeing the progress that a student makes after going through " guitar boot camp" lessons. I enjoy teaching them good habits, and showing them how to "trouble shoot" problems and errors, which increases their progress very quickly. In a spontaneous moment, I will show them a "guitar lick, so that they can also learn visually and aurally.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have been in music classrooms and taught privately to students about ten years old and up. Sometimes it's difficult to instruct students that have played for several years, because of learned habits. Years ago, this was a scary roadblock for me, but I've learned how to get around this common problem by being resourceful.

Tell us about your passion for teaching

I'm driven by the amazingly different musical styles that I hear. The more a student learns, the sooner his or her style begins to emerge, so the same song played by different individuals will always sound different. Whether I'm standing in front of a classroom or one on one instruction, I'm always in a hurry to get a student to play better-that's when I know I have reached my personal goal.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

I would say to new students that if they want to be a good musician, then keep a few things in mind; - Give guitar practice a high priority of your daily "to do" items - Be persistent, motivated and have a "can do" attitude - Don't worry about comparing yourself to other guitar players because there's always someone better and always someone worse!
