Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Long Beach Guitar Instruction

Glenn Stiglic · Long Beach, CA

Featured Instructor

Glenn Stiglic is a Los Angeles guitar teacher giving guitar lessons in Long Beach, and Lessons.com caught up with Glenn via Skype to talk with him about how he goes about teaching his guitar students how to play guitar. Below is the transcript of that conversation, but you can also watch the interview by visiting Glenn’s guitar teacher page.

Long Beach Guitar Teacher Glenn Stiglic

Lessons.com: We’re here today with Glenn Stiglic, who teaches guitar and has a profile on Lessons.com. Welcome, Glenn. Thanks for talking about your guitar teaching.

Glenn Stiglic: Thank you, James. A pleasure to be here.

Lessons.com: It’s a pleasure to be here with you too. Where do you teach? What city and what state are you in?

Glenn Stiglic: I live in Long Beach, California, and I have a home studio here in Long Beach, and I also teach at Morey’s Music in Lakewood, California – nearby.

Lessons.com: And do you also offer Skype guitar lessons?

Glenn Stiglic: I’m out there in cyber space with Skype, as well, so, if you’re not in the Long Beach area, we can hook up that way.

Lessons.com: That’s wonderful, and what’s the guitar lesson climate there in Long Beach. Do you find there are a lot of people who want to learn guitar?

Glenn Stiglic: Well, a lot of guitar, yeah, and I also teach banjo lessons, ukelele lessons, mandolin, bass guitar. So, between all those instruments, I keep pretty busy. So, yeah, [guitar lessons] a popular thing.

Lessons.com: That’s wonderful, and do you teach both adults and children?

Glenn Stiglic: I think my youngest is five and I have … my oldest is ninety-five. So, I’ve got that and everything in between.

Lessons.com: Wow, that’s quite an age range. That’s wonderful, and what style of music do you find your guitar students are interested in learning?

Glenn Stiglic: Oh wow … uh … There’s really no one style. Kids like recognizable songs. And you’ve got the teenagers – whatever is popular with that. Classic rock is always popular. Blues guitar. I have classical guitar students. It’s all over the map. So. I get it all.

Lessons.com: And, when you’re teaching, how long are your guitar lessons?

Glenn Stiglic: Typically, the default guitar lesson is a half-hour. I get some guitar students who do forty-five minute guitar lessons and also hour lessons. Hour lessons are nice; we take our time and touch on everything. Half-hour is pretty intense, but that’s the way it is. We keep the ball rolling here. Quick.

Lessons.com: And how often do you teach students? Do you teach students every week or more than once per week? What do most guitar students do?

Glenn Stiglic: I recommend once-a-week guitar lessons. If somebody’s is a good player, and just need touch-ups, they call me when they’re available. But it’s good to just have a regular program and do it once a week, I think, for the best results.

Lessons.com: That sounds great, Glenn. And, what are your fees?

Glenn Stiglic: It’s twenty bucks for the half-hour and then I do, for the hour, it’s thirty.

Lessons.com: And would you like to play something for us, so that people watching the video can get a sense of the style of guitar that you enjoy playing?

Glenn Stiglic: Well, there’s no style, but, I’ll make one up called, Let’s Skype. How’s that?

(Editor’s note: Here Glenn plays an improvisational acoustic guitar chordal/lead that many guitar students would like to learn. To check out what Glenn plays, please go to his guitar teacher page, where you can watch the interview in its entirety.)

Lessons.com: Ladies and gentlemen, that was “Let’s Skype” by Glenn Stiglic. That was terrific, Glenn.

Glenn Stiglic: Thank you.

Lessons.com: Thank you for playing that. That sounded great. And, in simple terms, could you describe your basic guitar teaching approach? What is your focus when you’re with an individual guitar student?

Glenn Stiglic: Well, individual is the key word there, James. Everybody’s different. My job is to teach music, have a good time. If I’m having a good time, then you are too! And I just assess each guitar student individually, and write out all my own material. There’s different ways to play different songs. I try to get it within the grasp of the student … to have them play the song that way. And then, as they get better, that can evolve into other things, learning how to solo … just like my with my song, you might have an A chord … you learn how to strum … learn different ways to do it (the A chord) … the triads. So, it’s an ongoing thing.

Lessons.com: Right. That’s wonderful. And do you offer guidance to your guitar students on what guitars to buy?

Glenn Stiglic: Sure, I can put in my two cents. The budget has a lot to do with it, but I know a lot about guitars, and I’ll offer my opinions, when needed.

Lessons.com: Of course. Well, that sounds great. It’s been wonderful to talk with you today about your guitar teaching, and to learn more about what you do and how you approach your teaching. I want to wish you the best of luck, Glenn, with your guitar teaching and with all the other lessons, as well. You mentioned banjo lessons, mandolin lessons, and ukelele lessons, as well.

Glenn Stiglic: Well, thank you, James; thanks for the questions. It was nice spending some time with you, and I hope to meet some of you guys here, real soon.

Lessons.com: That would be wonderful, Glenn, and, as we sign off, perhaps you could tell perspective guitar students how they could get in touch with you.

Glenn Stiglic: You can email me. I have a website: GlennStiglic.com, and my email is on there. Or, you could call. I have a home phone: 562-429-8623. So, you could email me or leave me a message on that, and we’ll hook up.

Lessons.com: That sounds great, Glenn. It’s really been wonderful talking with you, and I want to wish you the best of luck in all your teaching.

Glenn Stiglic: Well, thank you, James, and have a good weekend, my friend.

Lessons.com: You do the same. Take care now. Bye bye.

Glenn Stiglic: Thank you. Bye now.
