Sharon J. says, "The Wyoming Elite Music Academy of the Arts, now ELITE MUSIC ACADEMY OF THE ARTS , is the best music academy for children, teens, and adults! Joyce is the most fantastic piano, vocal/singing instructor my daughter and I have ever had! My daughter started piano and singing lessons online (via the Internet) with Joyce at age 5 and has absolutely loved every minute of it! Now, she is 9, and has decided to finish her voice and piano courses! Even Joyce's online lessons are fun, engaging, encouraging, and filled with important information and practice activities...and that makes my daughter want to do better each time, and even practice every day! I find myself on a similar path. I have progressed immensely in piano, and for the first time, with Joyce's online piano lessons, I have felt I have been truly learning how to play the piano well. I have learned more music theory than I ever thought was possible! My daughter and I feel so lucky to have found such an amazing musician and instructor who has in the past even collaborated with so many top notch world renowned musicians, and Maestros... and she has been our instructor! Beginners, intermediate, and Advanced students of all ages will achieve superb musical progress here! We look forward to continuing to take lessons with Joyce! Both this Academy and Joyce come highly recommended! For online or in person lessons, the Elite Music Academy of the Arts and Ms. Joyce are absolutely the best!" Read more

Your Flute Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do flute lessons cost near me?

Flute lessons cost $50 to $80 per hour for private sessions at a music studio. A monthly bundle of 4 to 5 lessons costs $190 to $360 total. Learn to play the flute on a budget through small-group classes that cost $20 to $40 per session.

Study how to play the flute with teachers from all over the world with online flute lessons that cost $40 to $70 per hour.

Are flute lessons worth it?

Flute lessons are worth it, especially for those committed to mastering professional techniques. Studying under a seasoned flautist accelerates learning and improves proficiency in playing techniques. Feedback from an encouraging mentor helps you get through challenges and avoid developing poor habits in posture or finger positions.

What do you learn in a flute lesson?

In an average flute lesson, you'll learn how to:

  • Breathe the right way when you play.
  • Keep your pace steady when you play.
  • Place your fingers on the right spots for each note.
  • Keep your body straight and in the right position.
  • Read sheet music.
  • Practice different musical scales.

You can get pretty good at playing a simple song on the flute in about 6 to 7 months.

What age is good to start flute lessons?

A good age for kids to start flute lessons is from 6 to 9 years old. Adult learners can start flute classes at any age.

A child is ready to begin flute classes when:

  • The child's hands are large enough to hold the instrument.
  • A kid has sufficient lung capacity for the breath control needed to play the flute.
  • Children can concentrate for at least 30 minutes.

How long does a flute lesson last?

A flute lesson lasts about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the student's needs. Beginners often start with shorter lessons to slowly increase their focus and improve their flute-playing skills.

How do I find a flute teacher near me?

Find a flute teacher near you by searching for private instructors here on Lessons. You can also ask for the availability of teachers at local music stores. Flute classes might be available at community colleges too.

Before choosing a flute teacher near you, don't forget to:

  • Collect prices for 3 different flute courses to compare them.
  • Read what people have said about them on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of students they have taught in the past for references.
  • Check with other parents if the teacher is popular with kids.
  • Get a copy of the agreement and the schedule before the first lesson.
  • Wait until you've had a few lessons and feel that the teacher is a good fit before paying for a whole month.

What questions should you ask a flute teacher?

Before you book lessons with a flute teacher, ask them:

  • How long have you been teaching the flute?
  • What music school did you go to?
  • Have you played the flute professionally?
  • Can I try a lesson for free before I decide to keep going?
  • What ages or skill levels do you like to teach?
  • What kind of flute should I get if I'm just starting?
  • How much should I practice between our lessons?
  • Can you tell me about any flute books or things that will help me get better?
  • Will I get homework?
  • Can you teach me in a different method that helps me learn best?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long does a lesson last?
  • How many types of flute music can you teach me?
  • Can I get a copy of the schedule and rates?
  • If I have to miss a lesson due to an emergency, what should I do?
  • Can I pick some songs I want to learn?
  • Do you help students audition, and how many of your students have made it?

My daughter (age 8) has been taking piano lessons at the DaVinci Center for 2 years. It's truly the best investment we've made for her. She loves piano and loves her teacher, Maria! The Creations Conert, local gigs and the Multiple Piano Festival are icing on the cake! Maria is an outstanding teacher, patient, kind, very very talented, organized, and knows how to connect with the kids. We are so lucky to have The DaVinci school in our community!!

Learning voice and piano at the Wyoming Elite Music Academy of the Arts has been an AMAZING experience! I took piano and singing lessons from age 7 to age 9, but I didn’t really like my lessons, so I stopped. Now, as a young adult, I decided to go back to piano, and also take voice, and be really good at both...So I decided to do some research, and look for the very best instructor I could find. After a good amount research, I signed up for piano and voice/singing lessons at the Wyoming Elite Music Academy of the Arts. There, I have been taking piano, and voice lessons with Dr. Crawford, and it has been the best learning experience ever! She is enthusiastic, patient, very knowledgeable, and knows exactly when to push and when to ease up. In addition, her lessons target all aspects of piano playing and singing, including technique, ear training, and musicality, which I very much needed. In singing/voice, she has given me much professional advice, and has helped me develop my voice in such an amazing way! She knows exactly how to get the very most of your voice, and teaches you great technique. She’s made all material so easy to understand and follow, which has allowed me to progress quite quickly. The entire staff here is kind, and very professional! They also clearly explain their policy, how they work, and how you can get the most of your lessons. Just what I need to progress as productively & beautifully as I have, in both piano and voice! After one year of lessons with the same instructor, Ms. Crawford, I can already play the piano and sing so beautifully! Have I said that if you want the same amazing lessons online, via the internet, instead of in-studio, or in-home, they also offer it? They are just really great all around! I could not thank the Wyoming Elite Music Academy of the Arts, and Ms. Crawford enough! I plan to continue my lessons until I complete both courses. This amazing academy, and Ms. Crawford, have surpassed my expectations! I'm truly thankful! As a recommendation anyone, children, or adult, is looking to truly learn and succeed, you could not find a better place! The Wyoming Elite Music Academy of the Arts comes highly recommended!

We love our instructor, Louis Racicot. He is so patient with my kiddo. I'm not sure if he had experience with instructing a child with autism...virtually, but he's doing wonderfully well! He is a professional. His instruction is simple. He breaks the music down in bite size pieces and allows my kiddo to succeed. He's the best!
