Our lessons are unique in that we impart not only skills in horseback riding but also in horsemanship and horse husbandry. Students learn about horse care, handling, training, tack and equipment, horse behavior, nutrition, biomechanics and so much more. We offer instruction in either English or Western, and all students will gain a solid foundation of horsemanship from which they can enjoy horses for a lifetime, or progress into a more specialized discipline should they so choose. Unlike many other places, we have the option of taking our lessons out on the trail once the student is comfortable and competent in the saddle, and we also offer the chance to compete in small local gymkhanas, schooling shows, or limited distance endurance rides for those who are interested.
We pride ourselves on creating a laid-back, relaxed and accepting atmosphere where students can get to know horses and learn to ride at their own pace, and we encourage our students to create close bonds with their horses so that both parties of the horse/rider team look forward to their lessons.
Since there are two instructors and multiple horses at M&L Horsemansip, students are likely to find the teaching style and lesson horse that complement their learning, or they are welcome to alternate between instructors to get the best of what we both have to offer.
Both of us at M&L Horsemanship enjoy getting to work with a wide variety of people to reach their horsemanship goals, whether those are just getting more comfortable in the saddle for a weekend trail ride or gaining the skills necessary for horse ownership. We enjoy the challenge of making sure we fulfill our students' learning needs and helping them overome obstacles. It's such a joy to observe people's skills improving and confidence with horses developing more and more in every lesson.
We also really enjoy helping people who have their own horses be able to more fully enjoy and understand their animals. There are few things more fullfilling than seeing a once tense and ineffectual horse/human relationship become one of comprehension and joy. When people learn to enjoy the horses they own, it's not only a win for the human, but also for the horse. Knowing that we can help to improve the lives of both horses and humans is very rewarding for us.

When working with students who will be riding our horses, we like to schedule a meeting for the potential student to come out to our barn to meet us and horses, tell us about themselves and their goals, get a more thorough idea of what we offer before committing to a lesson. This also gives people a chance to get their questions answered and go over the paperwork and safety requirements so they can be prepared to ride on their first day of lessons. Sometimes, they might even get the chance to watch part of a lesson in progress so they can really see our teaching style in action. If they like what they see, then we can set up a first ride.
