Hi! I’m Kat. I’ve been teaching partner dance styles for over 15 years, specializing in Ballroom, Latin, and Wedding dances. My dance training ranges from ballet and musical theater to Afro Cuban and International Ballroom. I firmly believe that cross-training provides a unique perspective when it comes to teaching. My passion is bringing dance to anyone and everyone, and giving my students the best experience possible. I live in Rockville, Maryland with my husband and dog, and my favorite pastimes include traveling, baking, and doing my nails....

Kate R. says, "My fiancé and I really like Victor's teaching style. We are even planning on continuing with him with another batch of lessons. We started out with me with some previous experience with ballroom dance and my fiance being a brand new spank'n new ballroom dancer. He does a nice balance of technique and fun artistic representation in a relaxed manner. I love the bits of history he throws in related to the dances we are learning which helps me to conceptualize what the dances were meant to be. We also highly appreciate that he does not sugarcoat his critiques (without being draconian) and, as my fiancé says, calling it out like it is and showing you how it's done, i.e. constructive criticism. My fiancé also states that as a new ballroom dancer and beginner student, he finds his style of instruction completely easy to follow. He definitely shows he has a lot of experience in his field and we are still learning a lot from this :)" Read more

Your hip hop dance questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do hip hop dance classes cost?

Hip hop dance classes cost $15 to $30+ per class for a single group class for adults, or $8 to $12 per class if you're buying 4+ group classes at a time. Geographic location and studio or instructor reputation also affect the price. Some studios offer an "unlimited classes" 30-day pass for $165 to $200.

Hip hop dance classes for kids cost $60 to $200 per month, depending on the studio, class length, and the number of classes per week. Kids' dance classes typically require yearly registration—often with a non-refundable registration fee of $25 to $50—monthly tuition, and extra fees toward the end of the season for recital costumes.

  • Private hip-hop dance classes cost $50 to $85 per hour on average. Some studios also offer semi-private lessons so you can enjoy more personalized instruction with a smaller group of 2 to 4 students.
  • Online hip-hop dance classes cost $10 to $35+ per month for a subscription-based service for live classes, pre-recorded classes, or both. Some websites charge by the class, with classes costing $5 to $10 each.

What is hip hop dance?

Hip hop dance is a popular "street style" dance performed mostly to hip hop music, with rocking and bouncing movements choreographed to the rhythm of the music beats. Hip hop dance is a high energy style that involves elements of several dance styles, including African dance, ballet, and tap, but typically has a more free and flexible structure.

What should you wear to a hip hop dance class?

Most dance studios recommend you wear comfortable clothes and sneakers with non-marking soles to learn hip hop dance. If your studio doesn't specify the attire, workout clothes, like yoga pants or sweat pants and a t-shirt usually work well for a hip hop class. Wear closed toed shoes that are comfortable, supportive, and have grippy soles. Check with your dance studio for their specific clothing requirements.

How do I choose the best hip hop dance class near me?

Hip hop dance classes are a great way to get mental and physical exercise, socialize, and just have fun. To ensure you're choosing the best hop dance class near you, remember to:

  • Go with a dance studio that is licensed, insured, and has been in business 5+ years.
  • Browse their profile and reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Review their website for scheduling information, dress code details, and photos or videos.
  • Read all contract terms before signing.

What questions should I ask when searching for hip hop dance classes?

Asking the following questions can help you choose the best hip hop dance class:

  • Do you offer classes for beginners?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Do you have drop-in classes?
  • Can I buy one class at a time?
  • Do you have any package deals or new student offers?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • If I'm running late, can I still get into the class?
  • Do you offer private lessons?
  • What methods of payment do you take?
  • What is the dress code?
  • What type of shoes should I wear?

I take bachata and salsa classes with Helena. I came in as a beginner and have learned SO much in just a few months. She really breaks down every step so that everyone can understand. I've had the problem in the past where the teachers move too fast and don't explain the steps. I haven't had that issue with Helena. Instead I feel like I understand the steps and can go out and practice them with confidence. I definitely recommend to anyone, of any level, interested in learning to dance or improve their dance in a fun, welcoming space.

I like, no - I LOVE how Jaime can work with you at any skill level. But she doesn't stop there! She challenges you to be better (and it works!) Even with having to do virtual classes, she has been just as excellent an instructor! 6 years with her and I never regret taking her class.
