About

My goal, as a teacher, is to enable students to experience the joy of making music. To accomplish this they are taught the fundamentals of reading a music score and applying basic principals of performing so that they and their listeners are pleased with the result. Each student is taught at a pace that is appropriate for him or her, tailoring material that fits their strengths and areas needing development.

I teach beginning through advanced levels and my membership in national, state, and local music teachers associations provide students opportunities to participate in various events for performing and evaluation.

My Bachelor of Piano Performance degree is from Florida Southern College where I received the Robert Gaylor Music Medal for Outstanding Senior Musician. Further study was with concert artists/teachers Gerald Snyder and Phillipe Drevet. Attending national music conferences and international piano competitions increased my exposure to a wide range of repertoire and artistic expression.

Music Teachers Association has named me a Foundation Fellow for outstanding contribution to the music teaching profession. I am a Past President of Florida State Music Teachers Association and hold a Certificate of Professional Advancement from that organization. I am a co-author and publisher of Music Masters Theory and Chairman of the Coral Springs Center for the National Guild of Piano Teachers. While these achievements and honors are gratifying my greatest satisfaction is seeing the look of pride on students' faces when they accomplish a musical goal. After all, it IS all about the student.

Two Studio Piano Recitals each year together with other performance opportunities ensure students and their families hear and see the benefits of piano study.

See the musical growth of students and helping them experience the rewards of piano study. Guiding talented high school students toward appropriate colleges and universities to further their piano study. I've had many students study piano in colleges and universities, all of whom were accepted by the teacher of their first choice

I love Mrs. Colvert’s ability to empathize with each student and create a customized plan. I started when I was in lower school, and I was motivated by how she chose some pieces that were well-known and up-beat. She knows exactly what students need at each age, and it’s clear that she is a lifelong learner.

My son Rodrigo took piano lessons with Mrs. Colvert for 12 years - starting on 1st grade. She is a wonderful teacher, very dedicated to her students, a wise woman and always willing to give 100% (and more if she could) for her students. You can tell how much she loves what she does! Each year, she carefully selects her students’ repertoire according to their level and likes. When my son got older he could even choose what he wanted to learn. Her goal is not only that the child learns piano but also loves music for life. She gives plenty of opportunities to her students to keep them motivated during the year: two studio recitals (Fall and Spring), aural, theory and performance evaluations and student day evaluations - all optional events. I have recommended Mrs. Colvert to several friends and all - children and parents - were delighted with her! I would recommend her again and again!

Working with the Piano Studio of Sue B. Colvert has been an absolute blessing. From our first meeting, Mrs. Colvert was professional and made my son feel comfortable. She is patient with each of her students and brings a wealth of knowledge to every lesson. My son has received many accolades in the past four years and it is all because of Sue Colverts guidance. For all these qualities, I strongly recommend the Piano Studio of Sue B. Colvert.

Sue Colvert is an exceptional piano teacher. After 12 years of lessons, I advanced from very simple beginner pieces to playing technically complex concertos and sonatas I loved. Though much improvement can be attributed to practice, her patience, attention to detail, broad knowledge of classical music, rich experience as a performer and teacher, and instinct for exactly what feedback to give and when were indispensable for my development as a young musician. Weekly lessons with her, as well as regular performance, evaluation, and competition opportunities provided enough structure to ensure I was always making consistent progress on my pieces. While studying with her, I was able to learn roughly a dozen pieces every year, many of which I took to competitions and performed well in (won some state-level competitions and gained national recognition).
In addition to serving as a great piano teacher who cultivates her students technical playing development (and by teaching music theory, as well), she also fosters a love of music and is a great, caring person. When I studied with Mrs. Colvert, I never felt like I was being forced to play pieces that I loathed. Rather, we discussed which pieces *I* would like to play, recommending several pieces I could choose from that she thought I would enjoy, rather than forcing her own favorite pieces onto my practice schedule.

Ms. Colvert has been both a musical and life mentor to me for over twenty years. Musically speaking, she has had students place at all different types of music schools across the country. Personally, she helped me secure piano lessons from the head faculty of piano at Vanderbilts Blair School of Music, despite the fact that I was not even a declared piano major. Although I did not pursue a piano career, Ms. Colverts training gave me the skills that gave me the option to. As a person, she is kind, warm, and understanding. She is both considerate when her students have had a rough week and did not have time to practice, but firm when it comes to meeting certain musical goals. She also provides wonderful music theory training, something that is largely lacking in many piano studios. She really provides wonderful lessons and guidance to students of all levels. (I started off by finding Middle C on the keyboard as a four year old.) By the end of high school, I was playing some Rachmaninoff. She continues to enjoy teaching students of all levels, and is particularly great with young children. I really cannot recommend her enough.

I started at age five and studied eleven months of every year through college. After college I continued to study for another six years. A course in Piano Pedagogy was most helpful. Listening to fine artists and recordings further added to my knowledge.
