Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each student is vastly unique! If a student has had previous musical experience, we always build on that foundation. If an incoming student has had piano lessons, I will hear him/her play a piece. It's not a test & it doesn't have to be a hard piece. I simply like to gain insight to strengths & possible areas needing attention.
For new students, we start at the very beginning & have fun on this new musical journey! As previously mentioned, I incorporate apps & off-the-bench activities particularly with beginners.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in music & study books, teachings, master classes, etc for continuing education. Never, ever stop learning!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Tuition is charged by semester. The first half is due by the first lesson. The second half is due by the halfway point in the semester. If a student begins after the semester has started, the tuition will be prorated. Students can view the itemized invoice online and we offer several options for quick, convenient payment. Students needing financial assistance are welcome to apply for a MusicLink scholarship which reduces tuition by 50%.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching beginner lessons when I was in college & absolutely fell in love with teaching so I studied pedagogy classes in addition to my required music classes for my degree. I've been teaching ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types & all ages.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love our piano recitals! It's always amazing to see the vast improvement from one year to the next.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find the teacher that fits your learning style and is able to guide you toward your personal goals. If you're not sure what your goals are (for instance, for very young students) then just be honest about that too! Sometimes students come into lessons with certain ideas & end up finding an entirely new passion, and that's okay!
Keep in mind regardless of which direction you decide to take, it will require practice & discipline. Diligence is the key to success in any area.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about what you want out of lessons. To play simple pieces, to learn to chart the songs you hear on the radio, to play for church services, do you want to perform? Do you have time for daily practice? If you have small children, are they able to listen & follow directions?
