About

Hi! My name is Carlyn Byrd and I have been playing the cello for fourteen years. I graduated from Tarpon Springs High School in 2017 and received my associates in arts degree from St. Petersburg College in spring of 2020. In December 2023, I received my bachelors degree in music performance at the University of Central Florida.

I really value and respect the relationship between the teacher and the student. If it doesn't work out, thats totally okay. Learning is personal. I have honestly had teachers that were great players but it just didn't work out with learning styles or personality conflicts. I value the students goals and what they want to learn or play. In my lessons, I have each student do a balance of theory, technique, and fun. I want you to enjoy the music and the art that you are producing, as well as, loving music more when coming out of your lesson. A primary emphasis of mine is that my students teach me as well. My students teach me how to teach and what does and doesn't work.

I love working with people and sharing a common love for music. Being able to engage in music and share the need for classical music in todays age is also very important to me; doing that as a team of teachers and students makes me feel like I am making a difference.

    Frequently asked questions

For the first initial lesson, I mainly get to know the student and the student will get to know me. Knowing where they are at in their studies and seeing if they have any material that they are already working on is very important. One big thing is knowing what the students goals are and what they would like to learn in their lessons. As a teacher, I see myself as a student always learning what learning style is best. Students teach me everyday.

I started teaching in my youth orchestras and the schools I attended. As section leader for the ensembles I played in, I helped to give feedback, fingerings, bowings and general advice. Having teachers and orchestra directors who love what they do really contributed to my love for teaching music. Those teachers and music directors gave me opportunities to teach others and learn more about myself.

I have worked with students of every age from five-year olds to older adults. I have also worked with students who have learning disabilities or have a chronic illness and it has been very rewarding for me.
Advice I would give to a student looking to hire a music teacher: Do not settle on one teacher, look around and have multiple lessons with several teachers to figure out which teaching style works best for you.
-What goals do I have? -What do I want to get out of lessons? -Do I have time to practice and devote to my instrument? -Is taking lessons something I individually want or something an outside influence wants? Communication is key.
