Alicia graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Masters in Spanish in 2009; she received a Post-graduate Certificate in Hispanic Studies in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Management/Human Resources from Park University in 2003. She is a member of the American Translators Association (ATA), the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and the National Spanish Honor Society.
She has 20+ years of teaching experience working as an adjunct college professor, Berlitz Spanish immersion instructor and lead instructor for A+Languages where she currently provides Spanish language instruction to business and government professionals and other students of all ages. Past and current students include Real Estate Agents, Lawyers, local business owners, FBI and military officers, college and high school students, retirees, and others interested in learning a second language.
She is an expert at tailoring instruction to meet student learning objectives; her teaching philosophy is to use a multi-sensory approach (PowerPoint, Videos, Songs, etc.) that makes learning Spanish fun!
She enjoys traveling, music, dancing and teaching her students about the cultural richness of Spain, the Caribbean and Central and South American countries.
Teaching Spanish is my professional passion! I love working with students and seeing their surprise when their language skills grow faster than expected!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I use a multi-media approach (PowerPoint, CDs and videos) that I think makes learning fun and we will talk to each other in Spanish (a lot). My students like a tailored approach that meets their learning objectives so they can start immediately using what they learn in class in real life.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Masters Degree in Spanish. My education included courses in Latin American politics, history, literature and culture. I have a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Hispanic Studies from UNC-Wilmington. I lived in Latin America for many years so I have unique insight.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$50 per hour at a location of your choosing (within a 10 miles radious)
$35 per hour at my location
$30 per hour for online (internet) instruction
$25 per hour for intensive Spanish training (min 4+ hrs per day)
I also do interpretation and translation work; call for rates.
How did you get started teaching?
I became a Spanish teacher by accident. I was living in Japan and some Japanese university student friends asked me if I could teach them Spanish. After working with them, I realized how rewarding teaching is and I've been teaching Spanish ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
Government, Professional, Retirees, College/University, High and middle School-aged. I've taught them all! I conduct both Individual tutoring and teach group classes.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently taught a Spanish immersion class for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. My student learned Spanish very quickly and after completing the course, he took a Spanish proficiency test for his job and got a score that exceeded his expectation!

Practce, practice and practice!!
