About

Hola! I have over 15 years of teaching experience. I put special focus on my student's strengths and reasons for learning. I ensure that students feel comfortable and motivated to learn the language.

What makes my class stand out is the work we do; the students and I in developing an "ear" for Spanish. We develop this skill through practice, consistency and more practice.

Jeannette is a wonderful Spanish teacher! I have been taking lessons with Jeannette for several years, starting as a beginner without any prior Spanish language experience. She is a very skilled teacher who is patient, kind, and willing to work with you at your comfortable pace. I highly recommend working with Jeannette!

I feel very fortunate to have found Jeannette Ortiz. She is excellent in every way.
Prior to starting with Jeannette, I found Spanish classes online with an “academy.” I took a week of classes (which I was required to pre-pay) that left me frustrated and having felt like I wasted my money. The classes were completely unstructured, with the teacher not even remembering what had been covered the prior lesson, etc. It was a haphazard mess. As all professional teachers know, preparation in the form of lesson plans, knowing when, how and what new material to introduce, supplemental exercises for homework if the student is interested, etc. is crucial. I come from a family of educators and have witnessed first-hand the effort and time it takes to do lesson plans. There’s a reason these are required of all educators in classroom settings and when an independent tutor skimps on these, it is reflected in the quality of the lesson. You are entrusting yourself to your teacher, putting in hours of effort to acquire a skill. You deserve a teacher who takes this responsibility seriously. Jeannette is extremely conscientious and is an ultimate professional.
Jeannette puts a lot of effort into customizing lessons for the individual. She puts her years of experience as a professional educator into having a plan for ensuring I acquire new skills at a pace that’s right for me. There’s nothing haphazard about it. Jeannette introduces new concepts at the right time, ensuring a pace that’s best for the student.
Jeannette makes a document in Google Docs for each student. She posts the lesson plan for each lesson, so a student can study ahead to have a bit of a foundation before the lesson if one wishes. At the beginning I did but I haven’t had time for weeks now. And that’s fine, too. There’s absolutely no pressure. If I want homework, Jeannette will give it. When missing lessons for travel, Jeannette even offered to make a homework packet for me.
Jeannette works hard at ensuring lessons don’t become monotonous and at using different teaching modalities to ensure a superior grasp of the material. I do a 90 minute lesson. We spend some time doing exercises on Google Docs, some time doing exercises in the book, some time in conversation, some time with her asking questions, etc.
Jeannette has a lovely gentle demeanor. I never feel embarrassed or rushed. She is incredibly kind and patient.
I cannot say enough positive things about Jeannette. I feel I have the best possible teacher. If you put your trust in Jeannette she will do her very best for you. You will not find a better teacher.

It has been a wonderful experience working with Jeannette. Her classes are tailor made for my individual needs and she always tries to incorporate material that interests me. She structures the discussions to suit my level and is always keen to provide everyday examples of word usage and context. At the end of each class she provides a list of new words that were used during that class. This allows for effective revision.
    She is always on time.
I enjo the classes andalwaylookedforward to the next one.

Jeanette has an enthusiastic and likable personality, combined with sound knowledge of teaching skills. 99% of our class discussion was in Spanish which I loved - only resorting to English when needed.
Her experience in using on line teaching techniques makes it as good as having the lesson in person.

Jeannette is a very dedicated teacher whose preparation for our lessons are incredible. I am very happy and satisfied with our lessons. I have only been studying with her for a few months (and, to be honest, although I don’t have much time to practice enough to make it even better) I am able to understand Spanish much better than I expected for myself before we started studying together.

    Frequently asked questions

When I work with a new student, I explain first what the class is about and then I proceed to send him/her a link with a Google Docs page. I create a page for every student. On this page, I write the plan for each class; the first phrases we will be using to communicate in Spanish and the topics we will be covering. I will modify the page according to each student's goals and expectations. I might recommend to use a workbook to beginners for practice after lessons. I also prepare a lot of activities on Docs. The amount of exercises, packages and videos I provide will depend on the student's time and availability. The activities are fun not overwhelming.

I have always loved languages, that is why I got a degree in French and English from the University Mayor de Cundinamarca in Bogotá Colombia. I also studied at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I majored in Psychology and French culture. I have experienced first hand what it is to learn a second and third language.

I do have a standard pricing for each hour-lesson I teach and I am happy to offer a discount for multiple sessions. In general, I charge $40 per class online. When I travel to student's homes, I charge $55.

I started teaching little kids in my early 20's when I was in college. Then, I continued on to teach highschoolers at a Montessory school. At the moment, I teach mostly adults.

I have worked with students of all ages and enjoy those students who ask lots of questions and are motivated to learn. My job is to keep them motivated to want to learn even more.
