Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I greet them with a smile, and welcome them.
"Are you interested in Piano, Voice, or both?"
Depending on their age group, we begin with games and/or music procedures, and I observe their response.
I tailor the remainder of the teaching accordingly - to their level and interest.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelor in Music Education from Converse College
Master's from Ga. State University
Lots of workshops, on-line sessions, etc.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
In general, the fee is $25 per half-hour lesson, which is common for South Atlanta.
If I have to commute to the Northside, it is more. Call me at (678) 313-4120 or email me at [email protected]
How did you get started teaching?
I have always taught music;I love it!
I include voice, piano, audition preparation, staging, beginning/intermediate guitar, ear-training/sight-singing (how to read music with your singing voice, but predicting what the following notes will sound like)
What types of students have you worked with?
Everybody - from pre-school to older adult.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A 5th-grader was improving his creative composition skills. When I praised him, saying that he might become a composer one day, he replied, "It'll help with my piece-making!"
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for one who connects with your student. They should motivate striving for excellence, but still make it fun. They should challenge your student's brain, but not cause short-circuiting! :)
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Did my child request this, or am I doing it vicariously? (If so, maybe the parent actually should sign up.) Often, a good teacher will motivate and interest the student.
Can classic-based training transfer to pop, jazz, country, etc.? (Yes!)
How much time can I devote to practice? (10 minutes for pre-schoolers, 30 for grade-school, 45 for adults. This can be split up throughout the day.)
Will I stay committed for 6 months? 2 years? 5 years?
