About

Hi, I'm Ivy! I'm a Chicago-based trans femme jazz and math rock guitarist with 15 years of experience, and I am so excited to help you on your musical journey. (My pronouns are she/her.)

I teach at all levels, especially intermediate students looking to take their playing to the next level. I'm passionate about finding what you love about music and exploring the different ways you can express yourself.

I currently study with a Berklee graduate and professional neo-soul musician, and my interests include songwriting, composition, and music theory. Some of my favorite guitarists are Ichika Nito and Yvette Young from the band Covet.

I love sharing the joy of music with students of all backgrounds and experience. Tell me about your favorite music and what you want to accomplish. Do you want to be a singer-songwriter? The frontperson of a rock band? Already a musician and looking to add guitar to your skill set? Or just want to learn how to jam and have fun with friends? I'm excited to help you reach your goals and get exactly what you want out of playing your instrument.

Frequently asked questions

My favorite part of working with a new student is listening to them talk about their musical interests and goals, then tailoring our lessons to work toward that student's aims. No two students are the same, and they shouldn't be treated as such! Everyone has a different learning style and will move at their own speed with a focus on what excites them the most, and that's exactly how learning music should be.

I currently study with a Berklee graduate and professional neo-soul musician, and on my own study music theory, composition, and music engraving as special interests. I often learn new advanced techniques from great resources on the internet, such as Seiji Igusa's tutorials on YouTube. In the past I've studied with other touring jazz guitarists and recording rock musicians.

I work with students on a sliding scale of $30-45 per half hour lesson. Intermediate and more advanced students are welcome to take full hour lessons, but with beginners and younger students it's usually best to start with shorter lesson times and work up from there.

I've been teaching people to play guitar and bass ever since middle school when I showed my friend how to play bass so he could play in one of my garage bands. It's always been such a fun experience getting to know people through teaching them music, and since then I've gone from teaching several friends to teaching guitar professionally.

I've worked with everyone from recording artists and songwriters, to musicians with experience playing guitar or other instruments, all the way to complete beginners including children.

The main piece of advice I'd give any student looking for a new music teacher is to find someone who is excited to meet you where you're at and will focus on what you want to learn. There's no one right way to play guitar or express yourself, so a very rigid teacher may not be a good fit. If one teaching style isn't working for you, it's the teacher's responsibility to pivot and find a way that's right for you. Most of all, learning guitar should be fun and enjoyable, even if it's a little challenging sometimes!

A teacher should always be ready to make adjustments for your comfort and needs as an individual. If you feel uncomfortable talking to your teacher about something you feel is important to your learning, they might not be the right teacher for you!
