About
Being a part of a golfer's game is the best part of being a PGA professional. I have been teaching for over forty years and am captivated by the charm and challenge of helping a golfer produce better golf. After being an assistant and head golf professional for much of my career with teaching being blended in with other duties, I have been able to be the Director of Instruction for the Overland Park, Kansas golf courses and currently with Alvamar Golf and Country as the Director of Instruction/Head Golf Professional since 2013. Five seasons of focus on teaching has been a desire fulfilled.
During my career as an instructor I have been honored with the Midwest PGA Section Teacher of the Year twice. Golf Digest magazine has included me as a top five golf instructor in the state of Kansas. Golf magazine included me in a list of top instructors in the Great Plains region as well.
My style as an instructor is to endeavor to get to the fundamental reason the golfer is not satisfied with their game. Additional pieces of the puzzle could be their golf equipment, physical condition, pre-shot routines or thought process. The golfer leaves with a slight adjustment to the fundamentals or equipment and if needed a swing thought and practice shot to transition into the better golf they desire.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It starts with an interview to find out experience, other sports played, injuries, years of golf, occupation, amount of golf per week and listening closely to the golfer's description of what they desire and the fundmentals they utilize. Quite often it will likely include a down the line view and a face on view video of their current style.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a PGA member since 1980 and have attended many sectional and national teaching seminars and events. Additionally I have an extensive background golf club fitting.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My base rate for an hour lesson is $120. I give more half hour lessons than any other amount of time. There is a price break at a series of three with progressive price breaks at six, ten, twenty-four and fifty. Golfers of high school age and younger receive an approximate thirty percent reduction from the adult rates.
How did you get started teaching?
I was a fanatical student of golf once I started playing and peers sought my advice well before I turned professional. Once I begun the PGA program as an assistant the opportunities and requests for coaching grew and grew.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with; beginners, developing golfers,occasional players, juniors, men, women, competitive amateurs and tour professionals.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had students play in the girls high school golf tournaments in Missouri and Kansas including one state champion.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Talk to one of their golfers if possible. If not call or email the instructor and understand what to expect. Finally commit to one session to find out if the instructor speaks your language. The good teacher should be as tuned into you as your golf game.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The list would include; what specific shot skills they need to address, how much time will they will be able to devote to any change in approach and from their past what tools helped them learn a new skill.
