What or who inspired you to start teaching?

Eddie Moylan, my terrific coach at Cornell, inspired me both to learn more about tennis and to improve my game. He was a former U.S. Davis Cupper and top 5 American player and an astute analyst. So I started reading as much as I could about the history of tennis as well as about technique and tactics. As a New England tournament player, I achieved a men’s open No. 7 singles and No. 4 doubles ranking. I’m a tennis writer as well as a teaching pro and coach, so this field gives me additional insights and information about our great sport.

What do you love most about your job?

Teaching tennis is fascinating because it requires that you learn about your students’ strengths and weaknesses as a person and as a player, and then try to help them fulfill their potential as well as truly enjoy tennis. I’ve worked with students from 7 to 77 and every level from beginner to serious tournament player.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

My advice for aspiring students is to thoroughly enjoy tennis whatever your level. Tennis is different things to different people. The enjoyment can come from the exhilarating exercise, the thrill of tournament and league competition, socializing with your friends, or trying to master strokes and strategies, or all of these ways. Besides benefiting from taking tennis lessons, you can learn a lot from watching Tennis Channel and ESPN 2, reading the best tennis books and websites, and talking tennis with knowledgeable players.

Tennis is truly the game of a lifetime, and it will add years of enjoyment to your life.

All the best,

Paul Fein
