Woodard Voice Lessons
About
"Everyone is capable of singing, and singing well."
That is, and always will be my ideology. You just need the right teacher! Whether you're looking to pursue a professional career, audition for your community or church choir's solo, build your confidence for your own enjoyment, or anything in between, I'm here to help.
My voice lessons are tailored to your specific goals and needs. Through different vocalises and guided repertoire, you will learn:
-healthy vocal production practices,
-breath management,
-how to practice effectively,
-ear training and pitch accuracy,
-body/voice alignment, and
-vocal hygiene.
Under my tutelage, you'll also learn what to do when you(r):
-voice is hoarse
-are sick, but still need to sing
-have an audition. What to do, before, during, and after
-are having difficulty with a piece ("How do I troubleshoot??")
I am a teacher who is actively in the field. I have sung with the Maryland Lyric Opera, the Trentino Music Festival in Mezzano, Italy, and frequently sing with the Michigan Opera Theatre as a chorister. I am a graduate of Wayne State University with a Masters of Music in Voice Performance. I attained my Bachelor of Music from Virginia State University where I majored in Music Performance with a concentration in Voice.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Upon our first lesson, we will discuss the student's goals and expectations for the short and long term. We will also discuss what I expect from students in my studio. I will lead the student through a few vocalises to get an understanding of the student's voice and listening comprehension, then ask them to sing a song they've prepared.
If we have time, we'll work through the song they've prepared, and also formulate a plan to attain the goals we've discussed!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have two music degrees, both in Voice Performance. My performance experience includes Young Artist Programs

How did you get started teaching?
Teaching private lessons was the natural first step in my long term goal of developing a program for Detroit children to be exposed to classical music (opera, specifically.) Second to performing, teaching is best way for me to expose members of my community to classical music.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with students ages 12 and up with a varying range of musical experience. I prefer students looking to study classical music, but I also teach healthy vocal techniques to those who sing musical theater and popular music.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Your voice is such a personal part of you, so make sure the person you hire to critique and train your voice is someone you can trust. It should also be a person you enjoy being around and working with.
Be open to new ideas! The person teaching you may have a new way to explain things that you've never heard before.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are the goals I'm trying to attain?
What things do I need to ask of this teacher in order to get the most out my time and money?
Am I truly willing to put in the work necessary to attain the goals I've set for myself?
