Justin H. says, "Before working with Mike I would pick up my guitar occasionally, and put it down quickly, with no direction of learning. After the first lesson with Mike I was doing basic chord strumming, and within only a few weeks I was playing rhythm for some of my favorite songs. In the nearly 2 years that I took lessons with him I learned a lot and always looked forward to learning another song." Read more

David says, "Awesome instructor who knows his stuff It was clear from my very first meeting with Eric that he had a real passion for music and a mastery of the art of guitar. His lessons are fun, he's been quite dependable, personable, and knowledgeable, and I can't wait to learn more! He has a laid back attitude which really helps his teaching. More often than once he's gone over into his own time to make sure I get a lot out of each lesson." Read more

My love of guitar has always stemmed from my desire to play music that I find personally engaging. Over the years I have played many styles of music in many contexts but the simple excitement that comes from replicating something exciting is still the driving force behind my desire to play. My hope is to help create a similar connection for my students, to provide materials that feel personally import and engaging, and to add on to that passion by exposing players to exciting new music. Education runs in my family. I have been actively engaged either as a student or teacher for my entire life and I hope to always be connected to education. I ...

Vicki D. says, "Joe provides quality instruction and a unique approach to learning an instrument and improving skills. Several times a year he will arrange for multiple students to meet and play band style! This encourages collaboration and improvisation. I succeeded in encouraging my husband to take up drums again with Joe, so now my husband and son will play songs and riffs together. Joe puts adult students together for jam sessions as well!" Your Acoustic Guitar questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do acoustic guitar lessons cost near me?

Most acoustic guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per session for 30 to 60 minutes. Private class prices are $45 to $70 per hour and give students the most attention. Group guitar lessons cost $25 to $35 per session for a collaborative learning environment with less personal attention.

Subscriptions for ongoing lessons are available from $170 to $315 per month.

Are acoustic guitar lessons worth it?

Acoustic guitar lessons are worth it because the structured teaching style motivates students and enhances faster progress. A private instructor also helps to prevent the development of poor techniques common in self-taught musicians.

What age is good to start acoustic guitar lessons?

You can start acoustic guitar lessons for children from ages 6 to 10 years old while adults can start lessons at any age. The journey of mastering the guitar is dependent on your dedication to practice and your teacher's qualifications.

How many acoustic guitar lessons do I need?

The amount of acoustic guitar lessons you need will depend on what you want to accomplish and how frequently you practice. Learning a simple song takes 2 to 6 months on average. However, mastering the guitar like a professional musician takes 4 to 10 years.

Is there a difference between electric and acoustic guitar lessons?

There are many differences between electric and acoustic guitar lessons because these instruments have unique features.

An electric guitar requires you to learn:

  • How to use an amplifier
  • How to work with effects and foot pedals
  • What makes a wide range of sounds for rock, metal, blues, or jazz
  • Techniques like power chords, palm muting, and note bending

However, learning to play an acoustic guitar is simpler because it doesn't connect to amplifiers or cables. Acoustic guitar playing uses different finger techniques to make a resonant sound suitable for folk, country, pop, and blues music.

How do I find the best acoustic guitar lessons near me?

To find the most suitable acoustic guitar lessons, you can peruse the list of nearby teachers here on the Lessons website. Also, don't overlook the potential of local music stores for guitar lessons.

Before settling on a guitar teacher, it's crucial to:

  • Review the prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Examine reviews about them on Google and Lessons.
  • Ask for references from other students they've taught.
  • Consult with other parents to gauge their children's experience with the teacher.
  • Get a written schedule and contract prior to the first lesson.
  • Evaluate the teacher's compatibility before signing up for a full month.

What questions do I ask when choosing an acoustic guitar teacher?

To choose the best acoustic guitar teacher, it helps to pose these questions:

  • What music-related degrees do you have?
  • Is there an option for a complimentary first session to see if we're a good fit?
  • What is the extent of your experience in teaching guitar?
  • Which type of acoustic guitar would be most appropriate for me to practice on?
  • What's the average age range of your student base?
  • Will you assign finger drills for me to practice outside of lessons?
  • How much independent practice do you recommend between classes?
  • Which specific textbooks should I get?
  • How many styles of guitar music can you teach?
  • Could you adjust your instructional methods if I'm having difficulties?
  • What should I bring to our classes?
  • How long is each session?
  • Could I get a copy of our class timetable, agreement, and terms of payment?
  • What is your protocol to cancel a class due to an unforeseen circumstance?
  • Is there flexibility to add some of my favorite songs into the curriculum?

I've been taking lessons with Mike for a few years now and I'm very happy with the progress I've made. Mike is a great teacher, he's very knowledgeable and talented, and he does a really good job of incorporating my questions and interest into our lessons. He gives me good constructive feedback and always has good suggestions on how to improve. Mike has a lot of real world experience playing in bands and recording and producing music which he also works into our lessons and I find that to be incredibly valuable as well. If you're looking for a guitar teacher I would highly recommend Mike.

Pat Balder is an exceptional singing teacher. His training and background see him combining the best parts of traditional and contemporary vocal practice. He has built his own approach, merging parts of other disciplines such as SLS, Estil, Opera and more. Even online he has been able to work bringing my voice to a level at which I am thrilled - I've found the voice I always wanted. Pat has a great ear for hearing the parts of your voice that need refining, and even online he notices subtle physical nuances. He's also an amazing singer who can do almost any style. And he's a kind-hearted, charming guy. I couldn't recommend him more!

I had never played guitar prior to taking lessons with Ryan, and I cannot express how grateful I am that I decided to enroll in twin cities school of guitar! I can confidently say I would not have made as much progress as I did if I had tried to teach myself. Ryan was attentive, supportive, and very knowledgeable. I’ve had a great time trying out the different lesson types and have learned something new from each one. I had lots of fun with the group lesson aspect- seeing others improve was inspiring! Not only does Ryan help you improve in classes, he also offers practice techniques that encourage growth at home as well. If you’re thinking of signing up for lessons, Ryan is a fantastic teacher and starting guitar has been my favorite part of my summer!

Eric is a wonderful guitar teacher. He has been my son's guitar teacher for 2-years. I admire the honesty and patience that he has with my son, in addition to keeping lessons fun. I admire how he stresses the basics, yet encourages my son to practice familiar songs to keep it fun for him. My favorite part is when I hear Eric and my son do a "jam" session. Not sure if that is the right word, but it sounds so cool when they play together. I highly recommend Eric as a guitar teacher.

Hector has a great ability to dial in to the students level and teach them theory while giving them rewarding things to practice with that don't feel like theory. His breadth of musical knowledge allows him to adapt to many musical tastes, making the classes more enjoyable.

Al Ynigues was very welcoming and friendly, and my first drum lesson went as well as could be expected for an extremely rhythm challenged student. Mr. Ynigues lesson plan was well organized and presented.

Our high-energy twin boys started with Joe when they were 8 years old. We were looking for a nontraditional guitar teacher, someone who would keep music exciting and go with the learning styles of our kids. That is EXACTLY what we got! Joe has followed their interests and even helped them learn the basics to songs they hear on the radio. They have gained confidence and skill faster than we could have ever imagined. He connects with the boys well and explains things in ways they can understand. They are learning drums, guitar, and explore the synthesizer too. They are learning song writing and to analyze music. He also does jam sessions with them where they can let go and be creative. We are so happy to have found Joe!
