Dr Wong Golf Academy
About
I am a 34 year old part time golf instructor living in Minnetonka, MN. I work in finance full-time and teach golf part-time. This allows me to offer much more affordable rates than full time instructors.
Since I was about 10 years old, I have been obsessed with golf. On a regular basis, I am studying swings of the best players in the world, absorbing content from top instructors on instagram, and reading up on the latest cutting edge research including biomechanics, ground reaction forces, and speed training, amongst others.
The golf swing is largely cause and effect. While it is easy to identify a problem in the swing, you often need to go back 2 - 3 steps in the swing to find the cause of it. During our first session together, we will identify the root cause of the issues in your swing and work through solutions in a relaxed, focused, and enjoyable environement. Students will experience both immediate and lasting improvement, leading to more consistent start line, curve, trajectory, and of course - more distance!
I instruct beginners, intermediate, and advanced level. My favorite students to teach are players in the 5 - 20 handicap range, as a small tweak in technique can often result in huge improvement.
Growing up, I received lessons from several instructors who taught me the wrong things to work on and set me down the wrong path. I became a 2 handicap by my senior year of high school, but that wasn't good enough to fulfill my dream of playing D1 golf. Through the information I've learned and applied to my own swing during the last 10 years, I am now a +2 handicap and compete with many former and current D1 players in Minnesota state amateur events.
I wish I had received better instructrion growing up, which is why I am so passionate about making my students improve. I have put in the work to understand the golf swing and I know how to make you better. All you have to do is show up, listen, and be willing to put in the work!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Discuss player's game and goals. Watch student hit 10 - 15 full shots. Record swings on video and launch monitor. Discuss what I am seeing with student and identify areas of the swing that need to be improved. Work with student to give them drills for new feels / positions that need to be acheived to correct swing issue. Outline practice plan for student to work on their swing both at home and on the range after conclusion of the lesson. Schedule follow up lessons as needed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Trackman Level 1 Certified
Rotary Swing Tour (RST) Level 1 Certified
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$65 per lesson, which usually last 45 minutes to an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I have a very analytical mind set and have always been interested in golf swing mechanics. I have given a lot of tips to my friends over the years, and one day one of them told me I should really consider teaching. I started part-time and have loved every minute of it. At some point I will likely switch over to full-time.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with low, mid, and high handicap golfers of all ages. The great thing about golf is that you are just a good instructor away from really improving your game, and I love to be that person!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I played with my friend, who is a 7 handicap, at Whistling Straights and Erin Hills in July. At Whistling, he was hitting the ball all over the place and didn't break 90. After a 20 minute tune up on the range to get his arms deeper (i.e., more behind his heels at the top of the back swing), he proceeded to shoot a 77 at Erin Hills the next day, one of his best scores relative to course rating ever!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would tread lightly with who you are working with. If an instructor wants to "rebuild your swing," "fit you into their swing model," or thinks they have all the answers that nobody else does, I would run the other way.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I would ask what kind of technology they are using. A lot of instructors still don't use launch monitors or cameras during lessons. Why guess when you can measure?
