About
Hi! My name is Andrew Plunkett and I am a PGA Golf Coach from Ireland. I love golf and love teaching others how to improve, both for performance and enjoyment reasons.
I pride myself on being a true GOLF coach, rather than a SWING coach. I teach my students about the physics of golf in very simple ways so that they know exactly what causes good (or bad!) shots. With this information, we discuss how to create different impact positions to produce the desired effect.
For example, to hit the ball higher, a club's loft will need to increase at the moment of impacting the ball. I explain this to the student and discuss how we can add more loft at impact using technique. Many coaches will skip the discussion and go straight into the technical change (this is what I mean by SWING coach rather than GOLF coach). The student may leave having improved, but don't understand the reason for making the change and quickly revert back to their old technique, going round in circles for, potentially, their whole golfing lives. My students leave truly learning new skills rather than technical positions to repeat for no given reason.
Please get in touch if you'd like to learn more about me, my practices or any other questions you may have!
I am a people person, and I love to help people. I combined this with my love for golf by coaching people. I want people to enjoy this great game, but many don't. I believe this is because it can be so frustrating to play 18 holes not knowing why you hit bad shots, being unable to find a solution. I teach people to understand golf, where good and bad shots come from and how to troubleshoot on bad days and control your golf ball more. It makes me happy to be able to help someone enjoy their hobby even more.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$100 p/hour. I find that lessons shorter than an hour are too short to make considerable improvements. However, I do offer shorter lesson times in respect of student schedules and preferences.
How did you get started teaching?
I'm a people person and love to help people. I got started working in a golf club in Ireland. I loved giving lessons, showing people how to play the game they love without getting so frustrated at not knowing why they hit bad shots and not knowing how to improve.
I volunteered at kids and teens club at our church and that gave me the experience of working with children that I brought to my coaching profession. Teaching 100 kids per week, I loved introducing this great game with fun experiences to the kids.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a coach who discusses changes with you, ensuring you understand their reasoning. You are paying them to improve your game, but also to teach you. You should know and understand why they make changes!!
Also, find a coach you enjoy spending time with. The perfect coach with the perfect student will have bumps in the road where performance is slow or even reverts before improving. You don't want to spend your money going to a lesson that you rely on effective performance to enjoy it. That is damaging for your enjoyment and also your development with the added pressure on results.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do I want to improve by taking lessons? My scores to be lower? Improved enjoyment? Understanding of how the golf ball flies (curvature, height, distance)? There are no wrong answers to this question.
