I taught piano lessons out of my home in Illinois for 18 years. Now, I'm back in my home state and want to continue! Once a child has been in kindergarten 2 weeks, I warmly welcome them as a student. By then they have the dexterity & focus necessary for lessons. There's no limit on age after that! First & foremost I love God & love to teach!!! I enjoy explaining concepts in various ways until I see it click on a student's face. I'm patient, kind, trustworthy ... and FULL of fun & excitement! My goal is to make each student laugh ... or at least smile at each lesson! I use Faber Curriculum, but if you've started with something

I am a proficient performer in Jazz and Classical music, I love teaching it, and have had many years teaching everyone from the beginner (all ages) to the most advanced students. (I am currently working with a student on Rachamaninoff’s 3rd Concerto). I have a Doctorate in Piano Performance from Yale, a member of MMTA, Over twenty years of college teaching experience, but doing more performing than anything else lately. I love communicating my passion for an art that is so necessary for times like these, and finding what allows each student to develop their talent with freedom and joy. I consider my role to be like a personal trainer, not s...

Joseph G. says, "Peter Shu is an excellent teacher! I started taking lessons with him beginning in February of 2017. He is very adaptable to each student in his teaching approach where he is constantly emphasizing technique and theory without sacrificing fun or the musical preferences of his pupil. He is patient yet firm and can teach a variety of styles from classical to jazz to popular to sacred. I would highly recommend him for both adult and or child beginner and or advanced!" Read more

What are classical piano lessons?

Classical piano lessons teach you the traditional playing style of music written by composers like Mozart and Beethoven. You'll also learn important techniques and how to read sheet music of classical arrangements.

How long must you take piano lessons to play classical?

You must take piano lessons for 1 to 2 years with consistent practice to play simple classical pieces. Some people can make faster progress if they practice more often or have prior musical experience.

How long are classical piano lessons?

Classical piano lessons are 30 to 60 minutes long on average. The amount of time varies according to the teacher's style and the abilities of the student.

How do I find the best classical piano lessons near me?

Find classical piano lessons from private instructors by looking through the listings here on the Lessons website. Local music schools sometimes offer virtual lessons online as well.

Prior to hiring a local piano instructor, you should always:

  • Secure a minimum of 3 lesson cost estimates to get a clear comparison.
  • Read their ratings on sites such as Lessons and Google.
  • Talk to students on their references list.
  • Collect a written agreement and a lesson timeline before lessons begin.
  • Wait until after your preliminary sessions to start pre-booking for a month of lessons.

What question do I ask when choosing classical piano lessons?

When you're searching for a piano teacher, be sure to ask these questions:

  • How many years have you been teaching piano?
  • What is your formal music education background?
  • Which classical music composers are your favorites?
  • What is the typical age range of your students?
  • Do you offer a trial lesson, either for free or at a discounted rate?
  • If I don't have a piano, what type of keyboard should I get for practicing?
  • How much practice should I be doing outside of our lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and what's their cost?
  • Do you give assignments or pieces to memorize after each lesson?
  • Can you adapt your teaching style based on the individual student's needs?
  • What should I bring with me to our lessons?
  • How many different piano genres and styles can you teach?
  • Can I get a written copy of our agreement and the payment terms?
  • What is your policy for cancelling a lesson?
  • Will I be able to choose some of my own favorite songs to learn?

A masterful pianist and jazz musician in general, and a caring, creative, patient teacher. I can't imagine my four sons ever outgrowing him, and he has become a beloved family friend. My eldest two sons, ages 10 and 12, have become accomplished well beyond their peers who are learning to play piano from other teachers. In fact, they seem to be many years ahead of their peers, and their technique is better. Russ is a star at breaking down every concept in a way they easily understand, can practice independently, and then master under Russ’s guidance. I have never seen anyone play so masterfully who is also able to teach his craft as well as Russ. He is personable and fun, and my boys LOVE their lessons. Russ can teach any style of piano well, from jazz piano to classical piano, to pop...anything. He can also compose music. For instance, the only piano music we could find for the well loved jazz piece “Linus and Lucy” didn’t include the descant, so Russ whipped one up for us and figured out where to insert it! It sounds amazing! Russ is also currently teaching my son two classical pieces by Mozart and Rachhmaninoff. He can teach any style at any ability level. I can’t wait to take lessons from him myself after my boys grow up!
