About

Excellent vocal technique gives the artist freedom to sing in a healthy way in any style of music for life. The most important part of this is learning how to breath in a way that supports the voice, which affects pitch, phrasing, tension and every other aspect of singing well. Other important aspects are mouth position, interpretation, diction, posture, pronunciation and music theory skills. I take the singer where they are now, whether a brand new student of singing or someone with many years of experience, and apply the technique to one's training.

I particularly love working on musical theatre and classical repertoire, but I am happy to work on any style of music. The technique remains the same. It has been very rewarding to see my students win conservatory scholarships. It is fun and interesting work to help prepare students for auditions including rep selection, mock auditions, preparing applications and videos. I have a network of other professionals who can prepare a student's monologue or create a dance combination as well.

Montclair Voice Studio Distance distinguishes itself from other studios in providing a most optimal and holistic learning environment. Each student is fully assessed and given the tools to identify and correct “weaknesses”, build upon strengths and cultivate ones’ scholarship all while encouraging one to connect with the best opportunities for one’s own artistic/recreational/professional development. I truly cannot say enough about what a wonderful and RARE gem and model is found here. They see you at your best potential here and you leave the studio reaching that potential! Isn’t that the point of learning?!!!

Working with Montclair Voice Studio carefully and warmly helped shape my career as a healthy, young vocalist. I was fortunate enough to work with Mia starting when I was 11. She taught me the fundamentals of how to support and take care of my voice. Not only do I love and value Montclair Voice Studio for what I learned, but I do for the incredibly warm and comfortable environment that I was taught in. Mia made me truly feel at home and cared for. Montclair Voice Studio was an incredible place to study voice, and I highly recommend it to others.

My daughter has been working with Mia for a couple of years now, and still thoroughly enjoys the sessions. Mia is a true professional, and keeps her training fresh and fun. Mia even keeps a close eye on the student’s vocal health. We feel really lucky to work with Mia.

Mia Norrie is an expert professional vocalist. As a teacher she imparts her knowledge of singing in a fun and challenging method. She encourages her students to physically strengthen their vocal chords while developing their personal style of singing. I personally benefited from learning how to control my breath, strengthen my vocal cords and effectively cured a scratchy voice due to throat nodules. I really enjoy her positive upbeat method of teaching while learning how to best sing my favorite songs.

In the first lesson, we discuss the basics of healthy technique. We also talk about prior training in voice and other instruments. The student will learn the warmup exercises that will start each subsequent lesson. Additionally, we will consider the student’s goals, for example: conservatory admission; role preparation; community theatre auditions; singing for the fun of it!!
