Steve H. says, "About 2-3 months ago, I started looking for a football trainer for my 10 year old son. My son plays outside linebacker/ safety in tackle football. I wanted someone specific to these positions. I had never done anything like this before so I wanted to do my homework before making a decision. I spoke to several trainers from various websites and organizations. There were some were out of my price range, some that didn't have experience with the positions I wanted, some that didn't communicate well in addition to others. When I reached out to Paul through lessons, you could tell he was eager to speak with me. He texted, emailed and called me several times before I was available. Once I did speak to him, he almost immediately addressed all my concerns. He just had a different vibe than the rest of the people I spoke to. You could tell he was driven which happened to be a quality I was looking for. We met with Paul for a consultation and he blew me and my son away. His positive attitude and work ethic are contagious. On the spot I agreed to 4 weeks of training. The first session was great! Paul had a great way of connecting at an age appropriate level. He was able to keep my son's attention, work hard, and have fun doing it. As the sessions went on and Paul became more familiar with my son, he began introducing a plethora of different drills to strictly target my son's position(s). He explained how it related to actually playing and what the purpose of each drill was. Paul often does the drills with him which adds a little something to the experience. We're heading to our 5th session tomorrow and my son can't wait to see what Coach Paul has designed for him. Paul has such a great attitude that my son doesn't even realize how difficult the tasks Paul has for him are. He works his butt off, is improving, and loves it. To summarize, if you're looking for a trainer that is knowledgeable, passionate, dedicated, positive, hardworking and innovative, Paul is the guy you need. He is going to improve your child exponentially and have a positive overall impact on your child. Regarding the business aspect, Paul is a true professional. He's upfront and honest about everything. He breaks down the financials for you. He is excellent at communicating. There is no room for misunderstanding. Just an honest hardworking guy who clearly loves football and training people." Your Basketball Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much does a personal basketball trainer cost?

The average cost of a personal basketball trainer ranges from $30 to $150 per hour for one-on-one sessions. The cost can be influenced by factors such as the player's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), the trainer's experience and expertise, and the location where the training takes place.

Additionally, small group sessions of 2 to 4 children can cost $30 to $50 per session on average, while large group training of 4+ kids can cost $20 to $40 per session on average

How do you train for basketball?

A well-rounded basketball training regimen should include skill-specific workouts, strength and conditioning exercises, and a structured training program. Skill development includes shooting workouts, ball handling drills, and training tailored to your position, whether you’re a guard or post player.

Strength and conditioning exercises such as aerobic training and strength training for primary muscle groups like hips, quads, and glutes are critical. A structured 6-week training program that emphasizes form, technique, and skill progression should improve your game.

How many hours do basketball players train a week?

Basketball players, especially those aiming to improve their skills, may train for around 10 to 15 hours per week, depending on the level of their game. The specific distribution of training hours across skill development, strength training, and other aspects can vary based on individual needs and goals.

However, much of that training time does not require an instructor. Shooting hoops, working out at the gym, and playing pick-up games all count toward the total training time.

Is strength training important for basketball?

Yes, strengthtraining is essential for basketball players as it aids in the development of speed strength, absolute strength, and core strength. It boosts blast impulse, the ability to generate force rapidly, crucial for activities like jumping for rebounds and swift changes in direction.

Additionally, strength training enhances power output and agility, allowing players to respond quickly to on-court situations and maintain an edge over their opponents.

What questions should I ask a basketball trainer?

Ask these questions when picking a basketball trainer to help you meet your goals:

  • What is your background and experience in basketball training?
  • Have you worked with players at my skill level or position before?
  • What is your coaching philosophy and training style?
  • How do you tailor your training programs to individual needs?
  • What specific skills and aspects of the game do you emphasize in your training sessions?
  • How do you address both physical and mental aspects of player development?
  • Do you conduct initial assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement?
  • How do you track and measure a player's progress over time?
  • How do you incorporate injury prevention strategies into your training programs?
  • What steps do you take to ensure the well-being of your athletes?
  • What is your availability for training sessions?
  • How do you handle scheduling and potential conflicts?
  • How do you communicate with players and provide feedback?
  • What role do players and parents/guardians play in the feedback process?
  • What are your fees and payment structure?
  • Are there any long-term commitments or package deals available?
  • Can you provide references from previous clients or players you have trained?
  • How do you work with players to set and achieve realistic goals?
  • What expectations do you have for players in terms of commitment and effort?

How do I choose a basketball trainer?

When selecting a basketball trainer, consider the following tips:

  • Look for a trainer with a solid background and experience in basketball training. Ideally, they should have worked with players at your skill level or in your position.
  • Understand the trainer's coaching philosophy and training style. Ensure it aligns with your goals and preferences for skill development.
  • Inquire about the specific skills and aspects of the game that the trainer emphasizes. Make sure they cover the areas you want to improve.
  • Check if the trainer conducts initial assessments to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensure the trainer incorporates injury prevention strategies into their programs.
  • Consider the trainer's communication style, which is vital for a successful training relationship.
  • Verify the trainer's availability for sessions fits your routine.
  • Seek references from previous clients or players the trainer has worked with.
  • Understand the trainer's fees and payment structure.
