Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
1.Upon first meeting with a prospective student, I assess him/her to see what level they come in at.
2.Then we begin at the beginning for the first few sessions so that I can identify any bad habits they may have learned along the way. I teach for mastery so I spend extra time on any area until I make sure the student has a good handle on it before I move on to new material.
3.Part of teaching privately is that I cater the session to the needs of my student; it is their session and we learn as the student progresses, at his level of comfortabilty.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching for more than 10 years in the private and the public sector.
I am a nativeof Colombia and have studied both Spanish and English my whole life.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $25/hr. The student may come to my office or, I can travel to them. If I travel to the student's house and its more than a 5 mile radius, I will charge $5 extra to cover the gas.
I work with all budgets so the student can pay per session or, pre-pay as well.
It is up to the student to decide how many hours we will meet per week.
How did you get started teaching?
I have a college degree in art and business. After home schooling my 4 children, I decided to begin tutoring. My business has grown a lot since 2008, the year I began tutoring.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught from kindergarden all the way to a 70 year old man.
I have taught doctors, lawyers, college professors, college students, high school students and many, many more.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love to travel so I try to go on short or long trips when my schedule and finances permit. I get rejuvanted when I travel to places I have never seen. I love returning to places I have been to before as well.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a native speaker of the language you are studying because the native speaker will know things about the language that is not conventionally found in books.
Find a tutor who will help you with pronouncing the words properly. That is a huge deal because you want to be understood when you speak.
Find a tutor who will give you plenty of time to practice conversing in the new language. Practice is a MUST!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Be honest about their struggles.
Ask questions no matter how silly they may appear to be. The only dumb question is the one left unasked :)
Communication is key to education.
