Daniel S. says, "I've learned from over a dozen dance teachers. It's really hard to find a good one. Some can dance but not teach. Others can teach but not really dance. Some can speak at length on theory without ever helping you connect it to whatever you need to do to dance well. Some make you feel like crap for every mistake. Some avoid the constructive feedback you need to improve. A good dance instructor knows how to provide constructive feedback and still be encouraging. A great dance instructor won't just teach you moves. They'll teach you how to do moves well, and they'll skillfully balance challenge with fun. A great instructor knows how to adapt instruction to the student's individual needs and goals. Colleen and Tommy are exceptional. Not only the best dancers I've known, they have a unique gift for expressing complicated ideas simply. They know how to structure information so that students progress quickly and continuously. They diagnose mistakes precisely and immediately, which is remarkable in itself. Most teachers have to spend twenty to thirty minutes figuring out what I'm doing wrong when I make a subtle mistake that has a domino effect as it throws my whole body out of alignment (like placing my foot a few inches too far in the wrong direction), but Colleen and Tommy have a sophisticated understanding of body mechanics that allows them to save time and energy (theirs and mine) in those situations. While even most good teachers stop at telling you how to move well, Colleen and Tommy place special emphasis on teaching their students to think analytically about the mechanical purpose of every aspect of technique, which facilitates acquisition and retention of new skills and fast decision-making on a crowded floor. They also charge half as much as studios with larger staff, and they host dance parties every week on the largest floor in the city. They've cultivated a welcoming community. Colleen and Tommy are brilliant, beautiful, caring people, passionate about dance and excellent at everything they do. You will not find better." Read more

Lily H. says, "We began taking lessons with Jesse to get ready for our wedding - we wanted to make sure that our first dance was one to remember. We started taking lessons about 4-6 weeks before our 'big day', and Jesse got us ready in no time. Not only did we nail down our first dance, but we learned a few other moves to break out on the dance floor at our wedding as well - it was a hit! Since we had so much fun working with Jesse, we decided to continue taking lessons, learning hustle, swing, salsa and bachata. We've been able to use everything we learned at weddings, out at night, and just about anywhere else we hear music. We HIGHLY recommend Jesse for weddings, or just to get out and have some fun!" Your ballet questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are ballet classes?

Ballet classes cost $60 to $200+ per month, depending on the studio location, reputation, and the number of classes per week. One class per week typically costs $60 to $70 per month, while the monthly rate for an unlimited class pass is $150 to $250. At many studios, you'll also pay a $25 to $50 non-refundable registration fee.

  • Ballet studios often offer the first class for free to help you decide if you want to register for a full season.
  • Some ballet studios offer a discount when paying in full for the entire season or when registering siblings or more than one child.
  • Private ballet classes cost $50 to $85 per hour on average.

What is ballet?

Classical ballet is a theatrical form of dance using slow, formal body movement techniques, music, and often scenery to tell a story or express a concept or emotion. Contemporary ballet dancing combines classical ballet with ethnic, jazz, and modern dance styles, incorporating faster movements, floor work, and often bare feet instead of ballet shoes.

How long is a ballet class?

While class lengths vary by dance studio, traditional ballet classes typically last 90 minutes, with the first 30 to 45 minutes spent at the barre to warm up the body and the second part of the class focusing on center work.

At what age can you start ballet classes?

Formal ballet classes typically start around age 7 or 8, but many studios offer "pre-ballet" classes for ages 4 to 6, combining games with ballet techniques and steps to create a fun class that helps the child learn some basics while also developing their ability to working together in a group class setting. Some dance studios even offer "baby ballet" or "mommy and me" classes for children as young as 2 or 3 years old.

Can adults take ballet classes?

Yes! You can start taking ballet classes at any age. Most studios offer ballet classes for teens and adults. Learning ballet as an adult offers many benefits, such as developing good posture, physical coordination, mental focus, mental and physical flexibility, self-confidence, and social skills.

What should you wear to a ballet class?

Most ballet studios recommend wearing flexible fabric that hugs tight to the body so your movement is not restricted, and the teacher can clearly see the moves you are making. Traditional ballet studios often require a black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers for female attire and black tights, dance pants, or dance shorts with a fitted white T-shirt and black ballet shoes for males. Every dance studio has its own guidelines for dance class attire, so be sure to confirm the clothing requirements with your ballet studio before your first class.

How do I choose the best ballet class?

When searching for ballet classes near you, be sure to:

  • Look for a licensed and insured ballet studio that has been in business for 5+ years.
  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Review their website for scheduling information and photos or videos.
  • Read all contract terms before signing.

What questions should I ask when searching for ballet classes near me?

Consider asking the following questions to help you choose a ballet studio:

  • Do you offer classes for an absolute beginner?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Do I need to register?
  • Do you offer drop-in classes?
  • Can I join a class that has already started?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • Do you have any package deals or new student offers?
  • Do you offer private lessons?
  • What forms of payment do you take?
  • Do I need to pay in advance?
  • What type of clothing should I wear to class?
  • What shoes should I wear?
  • Will there be a recital?

Jesse is not only a great dancer, he is an amazing teacher. I came in thinking of salsa as a glittery superficial fling and left with a whole new life philosophy. But it was not just philosophy - Jesse taught me the moves and customized the difficulty to my ability and my desire to do or not to do something advanced. His light and easy going personality was very helpful at that - he just threw me into the swirl of dance and taught me how to follow and to relax in the absolute unknown of what's coming next at you. A learning that travels way beyond dancing! That's the greatest value, regardless of how many moves you learn by heart. Thank you!
