About

What makes Patti's instruction stand out is her wealth of knowlege and vast experience with helping golfers of every level improve every aspect of their golf games, and have a great time doing so! A Spartanburg, S.C. native, Patti attended Furman University before graduating from Florida International University with a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Management. McGowan played collegiate golf at both Universities and competed professionally briefly prior to turning her focus to teaching and coaching.

Since returning to her home town and the Palmetto state in 2014 - Patti has been honored to be listed as one of the Top 5 Instructors in the State of South Carolina by Golf Digest in 2015/2016 and in 2017/2018.

Patti is also delighted to be the Head Golf Coach at Converse College in Spartanburg. Prior to coaching the team at Converse, McGowan operated her own teaching/training/coaching company for over a decade in Florida. Patti also served as the Director of Coaches Training and Certification for the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy - an Internationally recognized top Junior Golf Academy in 2013.

McGowan’s career initially took off after joining David Leadbetter and the Leadbetter/IMG Golf Academies assisting with all phases of their original multi-facility global expansion. She was a Senior Instructor and the DLGA International Director of Instructor Training and Certification for a decade. McGowan was instrumental in developing and implementing the Instructors/Coaches Training programs, processes, and the original "Leadbetter Certification" internationally.

Patti also designed the curriculum to many of the various levels of Player Development Programs that have been modeled extensively and remain in use today across the Globe. In addition to teaching/coaching/training extensively throughout the United States and Europe; Patti was also the primary Assistant Coach to many top touring professionals when they were at the very top - such as Nick Faldo.

Prior to joining Leadbetter full time - Patti was a Teaching Professional in Long Island, NY and taught and trained with Chuck Hogan (mentor of Lynn Marriott of Vision 54) for two seasons. Marriott and McGowan assisted Chuck with "SEA Golf Schools" which focused primarily on teaching/coaching the "Mental & Strategic" side of the game.

McGowan spent 14 years on Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers List as well as being named 2012-13 Golf Digest Women “America’s 50 Best Women Teachers and 2010-11 Golf Digest’s Inaugural Top 50 Women Teachers List. McGowan is a “Class A” member of the LPGA Teaching/Club Professional Association and was a “Class A” member of the PGA of America for 20 years.

Patti is also a Certified Level 2 Sam Putt Lab Instructor and a Level 1 Certified Swing Catalyst Instructor as well as proficient in instruction with Flightscope. Patti is available by appoinment for private intruction and coaching. Just this Summer Patti has become a Site Director for LPGA USGA Girls Golf of Spartanburg, and hopes to grow this new program.

McGowan has also authored and self-published one book - "Knack 4... almost Anything..." A fantastic motivational and inspiration book, and a great read!

The thing that I enjoy the most about what I do is helping people enjoy the game of golf a bit more, as they improve.

As a college player our Golf Coach Mary Dagraet had us help with clinics - I really enjoyed it. Later on I took lessons from David Leadbetter and eventually worked for him seasonally. David had also sent me to a mental coach "guru" at the time - Chuck Hogan - so I became very fascinated about how to not only improve the efficiency of someones techniquie - but also how to help them with their total game - so they actually played & scored better and had more fun!

I have successfully worked with every level of player form beginner to tour winner and even #1 in the world at one time!

The NCAA Regional Championship in Columbia with one of the Seniors on my Converse Tea, It was awesome to see her growth as a player & the confidence it gave her as a young adult!

Hire one that you connect with. An old mentor of mine used to say: "The teacher appears when the student is ready". Don't seek instruction or coaching unless you are ready to do your part and work at it. Even the greatest of Coaches can't do the work for you. They/we can offer solid advice, but you have to be willing to work & play at it.

Their availability, Their cost, What resources they use - video, etc. Their overall philosophy.
