J. ROCK FRENCH LESSONS
About
I have over 10 years experience teaching French and Spanish to adolescents and children. As an American whose native language is English, I am experienced in engaging students' learning processes to activate their motor skills and cognitive skills necessary for second language acquisition. In alignment with my students' goals of communicating in French or Spanish, we practice the basic skills of speaking, reading, writing, and listening. This leads us to greater conversation and cultural exploration.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the beginning, we work through any student belief systems that might hinder foreign language development. This includes discussing prior knowledge about the international world, people, languages, culture, etc. Next, I ask about his learning style, why he wants to learn a foreign language now, and his expectations. Foreign language learning, just like music studies or mathematics, takes daily practice, and a commitment to mastering content before progressing. So, lastly, I ask the student if he indeed is willing and able to make the time, daily, to practice French language learning.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in French Language and Literature, (and minor in Spanish Language), from the University of Texas at Austin. I taught French, levels 1-4, Pre-AP, and Advanced Placement, in public high school, for over 14 years. I was Department Chair of Foreign Languages 2007-2008. I was a Group Leader with EF Tours, leading 42 travelers on an international tour to London and to Paris. I have worked in Paris, FRANCE, as an office intern. I have traveled often to France and the UK.
