I just love it when I teach a student a musical instrument, how excited they get when they are learning to play their first song,. That is what teaching is all about to me having that student who is really willing to learn and take it to the next level, I play and teach multiple instruments, I teach Guitar, Acoustic, Electric, Bass, Dobro, Steel Slide, and Mandolin.Do not teach Keyboards.
I have a lot of patience when I teach . Started out in Delaware in a local music store, in 1989 with 20 or more students, then in 2008 came to Charlottesville Virginia and taught in a local music store here in town until the COVID pandemic, I have a few students under me that have gone on too play professionally, one student played on tour with John Legend.
It's the way I teach I make things very comfortable and learning is made to be very injoyable and interesting.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First ask if the had any kind of music in school, see where they are beginners or know some things about the instrument and music theory of some sort. Start them on finger exercises, My first goal is to get them to play their first song with basic chords. Then we get into a little music theory. And then it just blossoms from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Played professionally since 1970s . Studied Jazz theory with a teacher from Berkeley School of Music , John Dougherty for 6 years, went to teach music theory in the Delaware Correction Facility for 2 years. And a lot of on line lessons with professional musicians on the internet. Adam Levy, Robbin Ford, Henry Johnson. And also recorded my first original CD of original songs in 2002, and produced a bluegrass CD 2012, and just recorded a gospel CD for one of my students in December, 2020 last year. And right now producing 2 CDs of my own , one instrumental and another one with songs I have written in the last few years.

How did you get started teaching?
Started teaching 20 inmates in maximum security, and 20 inmates in minimum security at Delaware Department of Corrections in Delaware, after 6 years of music theory.

Recording in my own Studio right now because of COVID pandemic, and writing my own music.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be prepared , to learn and really want to play and know your instrument, you have to really want it ...that's when it really gets to be a part of you life and haveing the ability to play an instrument is so rewarding and a change of life. You make it what you want it to be.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What instrument you really want to play, how far do you want to take this, just for fun or to the next level, Music never stops I'm always learning something every day. Once you learn one instrument, all others are associated with each other , Music is the same on all ,they may be tuned different but the circle of music is the same for all.
