Casey D. says, "We are so thankful for Miss Nicolle giving our 7 year old daughter the opportunity to learn to play violin in the comfort of our home! Our family is in a very demanding season so the online lessons has made it possible and sustainable for us. Miss Nicolle was very helpful during the process of starting as we were very new to this about 6 months ago. She went above and beyond helping us locate a string shop to rent the violin from which was super helpful. It has been easier than I imagined to help our daughter with her lessons. The instruction videos are easy to follow and very motivating for kids. She is very good at teaching the students but also guiding/ teaching parents how to better help as parents are most likely new to this like me. Miss Nicolle is very encouraging and energizing in both the videos and in her lessons. Often includes games in lessons which is very engaging for the kids. She is supportive and understanding during moments of frustration and she continues to instill confidence and courage in our daughter which has been fun to see. Miss Nicolle pushes just enough to provide challenge and instill growth in our daughter each week. You can tell she has lots of experience working with kids because she is very good at it even in challenging situations. :) We look forward to the remainder of our daughter’s violin journey. Highly recommend you trusting Miss Nicolle with your ( or your child’s) violin journey." Read more

Your Violin Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do violin lessons cost near me?

Violin lessons cost $30 to $80 per session for classes starting at 30 minutes long or up to 60 minutes long. A private violin teacher costs $50 to $80 for an hour. A group lesson costs $20 to $30 each time.

You can expect to pay $190 to $360 every month when pre-booking violin lessons.

Are violin lessons worth it?

Violin lessons are worth it if you aspire to enhance your skills rapidly and perform for audiences. Expert tutelage in the violin can aid in cultivating appropriate techniques and tackling challenges efficiently, thus accelerating progress.

Learning violin without private feedback is extremely difficult and takes much longer.

How many violin lessons do I need?

You need as many violin lessons as it takes to reach your personal goals, depending on how good you are now, how much you practice, and how qualified your teacher is. Most folks need to take violin classes regularly for many months before they can play a basic song or read music.

Generally, it takes about 3 to 6 years to start playing many different songs quite well. If you want to play like a professional, it often takes more than 10 years of ongoing practice and tutoring.

How long are violin lessons?

Violin lessons are 30 minutes long for beginners and up to 60 minutes long on average. Extended lessons are only for advanced students, will cost extra, and are subject to the teacher's availability.

What age is best to start violin lessons?

The best age to start violin lessons is between 4 to 7 years old at the earliest, or whenever you have a strong enough focus on learning and can hold the instrument comfortably. Children need to exhibit sufficient physical coordination and concentration before they can start violin lessons.

However, adults are capable of learning and deriving pleasure from playing the violin, irrespective of their age.

How do I find a violin teacher near me?

You can find a violin teacher nearby very quickly by browsing the listings here on the Lessons website. Alternatively, you can ask for affiliated private teachers at local music stores.

  • Before hiring a violin teacher in your area, always remember to:
  • Compare the prices of at least 3 violin instructors.
  • Read what others have said about the teachers on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask them which of their past students you can talk to for a reference.
  • Get a written agreement and a lesson plan before the first lesson.
  • Follow a plan to pay a little at a time until you feel sure the teacher is right for you.

What questions do I ask a violin teacher before hiring?

Here are some questions to help you find the best violin teacher:

  • How many years have you been teaching the violin?
  • What age group of students do you prefer teaching?
  • How many degrees in music do you have, and do you play professionally?
  • Can I try out a lesson for free or with a discount to see if it works for me?
  • Do you have violin rentals at your school if I don't have one at home?
  • How much do I need to practice to reach my goals?
  • What books or sheet music should I buy?
  • Can you change how you teach to help students with special needs?
  • What kind of violin music are you best at teaching?
  • Should I expect homework to memorize?
  • What should I bring, and how long does each class last?
  • Can I get a copy of our class schedule, agreement, and how to pay?
  • What happens if I need to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I pick some of my favorite songs to learn?

Working with Nicolle exceeds beyond expectations coming from a beginner of the violin. Nicolle makes learning a new instrument less intimating, fun, and accessible. Also, her program gives you everything you need; the online do it yourself pace, and the once a week virtual group sessions with her; you get the best of both worlds. She gives you every tool you need to learn and changes your whole view about learning an instrument. You not only learn how to play the instrument, but tips and tricks on how to stay motivated, she personally checks in on your progress, and gives advice to tailor the learning for the individual. Its such a personal experience. I couldn't recommend her enough.

Joe worked with our two kids weekly at our home for several years. He has a great way of connecting with the kids and is patient with them as they learn. Neither of our kids had much experience beginning lessons and they both were able to learn complete songs and play them in front of family audiences at recitals organized by Joe and his peers. While Joe taught our kids piano we know he is an accomplished violinist and I am sure an excellent teacher of many instruments. We are sorry he left Chicago but know he'd be a great instructor to anyone who hires him.

I’m 54 a year old woman and a total novice with respect to reading music and playing any musical instrument. Recently, I decided it was something I wanted to learn so I picked up a guitar and googled a list of instructors. Started working with Tom Stroll at MindfulMusicLessons. By the first phone conversation I was asked a few questions about skill level, if any and my musical muses. From there Tom was able to formulate the perfect approach toward a starting point geared specifically for me. The lessons have been wonderful as Tom is very patient, kind and intuitive. The homework is of the caliber that makes real progress possible. I appreciate Tom expecting a lot from me even though I just started learning guitar from basically nothing. It’s easy to be pigeonholed by age or beginner status and do three lessons of scales and nursery rhymes. But instead Tom believed in my ability to meet a set goal with a curated theme geared towards my own interests. I’m very glad I’ve started up with Tom and would absolutely recommend him to anyone interested in honing existing skills or taking the plunge with something brand new and intimidating. Tom can bring out the best in you. -Christine

Rowan is great! His teaching style is constructive, encouraging, and as the student you can’t help but share in his joy for the violin. He teaches the greater concepts of music theory in a way that is accessible in order to help the student contextualize the music they're learning, which ultimately prepares them to grow into artists of their own who are eager to learn and to keep practicing.
