3 years in business

About this pro

Hello, fellow thespians! My name is Nick Buchanan and I live in Phoenix. I started acting at the age of 13 in my hometown of Akron, Ohio, in community theatre. Then, at 20, I moved to NYC. I was there for 20 years, and did a great deal of Off-Broadway plays, television, and film work, plus commercial print modeling for Bloomingdale's and Macy's. I performed my own cabaret show, and also wrote an original screenplay. Acting and writing are my two passions, because they allow me to branch out of reality and dive into the wonderful, colorful world of THE IMAGINATION! I had the best teacher of them all- LIFE EXPERIENCE. Being in New York and plunging into the world of show business taught me so much about my craft, the world around me, and the industry itself. I also just wrote and had published my first book; a memoir on my life. I would love the opportunity to teach and guide anyone who has an interest in the arts!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Getting to know them, telling them my experience, and guiding their imaginations to wonderful, beautiful, colorful new heights! I want to hear their goals, dreams, and aspirations, and help them as much as I can to turn them into realities.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Although I never studied at a college, I took Drama classes in high school, along with Chorus classes. I did a great deal of community theatre growing up, plus, while in NYC for 20 years, did Off-Broadway plays, tv, and various films. I also did print modeling, wrote an original screenplay, and just had my first book published. By diving head-first into the business and merely living in The Big Apple for 2 decades, I learned so much and experienced more than I ever could have in any classroom. And I still use that experience today; I just did "The Importance Of Being Earnest", in Scottsdale, and am now auditiong again for several new prijects!

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My rate is $20 an hour. And I make it a point to give students the ENTIRE, FULL hour, guaranteed!!

How did you get started teaching?

This is my first professional teaching gig, actually. But with my experience in NYC, and life itself, I have created my own stage; a unique platform of creativity and knowledge that can only come from getting out there and DOING IT!!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Going to the new Desert Stages Theatre, at Fashion Square Mall, in Scottsdale, to see "Barefoot In The Park"! I performed at DST; the now-old space, just next door to the mall, recently before it closed its doors forever. I was in "The Importance Of Being Earnest"- what a fabulous experience!!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Think about what you want to achieve, envision it, embrace it, and don't be afraid to take a chance. Show business and life in general require hard work, dedication, and courage. Without stepping out of one's shell and taking a chance, they will never know how far they can go or how happy they could be. Trust in my experience as an actor and a person, and talk with me and ask as many questions as you'd like. Get to know me, and I'd be happy to guide you with patience, honesty, and respect.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

1. What exactly is it that you want to do in life?

2. What are your passions and dreams?

3. Are you willing to work as hard as you can?

4. Are you willing to develop a thick skin to be able to handle rejection in the business?

5. How much time are you able to devote to your dreams?
