Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students are encouraged to show up to their first class a bit early to tour the faclity and meet their instructors. After the first class either private lesson or group we get a feel for the student as an individual - experience, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Then our staff includes that student into our ongoing progressional growth tracking system. Every student at our studio is on their own personal journey to discover themselves and develop as actors.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Matthew Dearing has a B.A. from Arizona State University where he studied photography, film making and acting. Since graduation Matthew continues to study with some of the best instructors from around the world (Including Larry Moss) to bring the absolute best knowledge and experience back to the state of Arizona.
Matthew and Leeann Dearing have been in hundreds of productions including TV, commercial, film and stage. They are both still working actors.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching kids acting classes when I was 24 years old. After training extensively in NY and LA I came back to Arizona and began to share my knowledge with actors of all ages and skill levels. We love actors, love the development process and get so excited when our students succeed beyond their own wildest dreams.
What types of students have you worked with?
Currently in our various programs we have students from 4yrs all the way up to 75yrs and everyone in between. We have actors who are just starting out and also train famous actors and millionaire CEO's. Our progam is great for those looking to take acting to a professional level and also for those who simply want to gain confidence and have some fun. We are also proud to serve many students with various disabilities social conditions. The Dearing Acting Studio has a passion for making everyone who walks in our door become a part of our community family.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We have a student who came to us 2 years ago who believed to her core that she was incapable of memorizing due to a tramatic event in her history. We stuck by her with consistent training and exercise and are proud to say that this student (in her 60's) has now more confidence, more energy and talent than she ever could imagine. She is currently starring in a play opposite a well known actor in a full length play that requires her to memorize 60 pages of dialogue. Pretty cool.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If it's too good to be true - WATCH OUT! Any place you are interested in simply search the compnay on google and add the "scam" to see what pulls up. Find someone you can trust and begin with the right intentions. Acting is like any other profession - there are no shorcuts and it takes great determination and hard work to get good. Having said that, anyone CAN BE an actor. There are people of every age, shape and color all over the TV. The key is to focus on skills and not fame. The most skillful actors succeed, period.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
There isn't much. Don't over think it. If you are being called to acting there is a reason. Acting is a beautiful artform and your talent can be used to transform the world. Don't hesitate. Get started... it's never too late!
