Sharline B. says, "David as an outstanding voice and acting coach. My daughter Lexi had the privilege of training under his guidance, and his impact on her development has been remarkable. David is not only a highly skilled coach but also a dedicated mentor. He took a genuine interest in my daughter’s growth—both inside and outside of coaching sessions. His encouragement, insight, and commitment helped her refine her talents and build confidence in her abilities. Thanks in large part to David’s coaching and mentorship, my daughter was accepted into one of her top-choice colleges, where she will be majoring in theater this fall. His expertise, professionalism, and heart for his students make him a truly exceptional teacher. I highly recommend David to anyone seeking a coach who will bring out the best in their students. S. Jeffrey H. says, "Kevin Ryan is an incredible acting coach. I’ve watched his work on the TV shows Copper and Harry Wild as an actor and couldn’t believe it when I found him on here teaching. He is the ultimate professional. For me, an absolute beginner, his approach was super clear and he made sense of the whole acting process (which seemed daunting and scary before working with Kevin). I look forward to continue to work with Kevin as he has so much to offer in every aspect of acting." Read more

Gemma B. says, "Andy is FANTASTIC! It has been decades since I’ve done film and about 4 years since I’ve been on stage, and I was cast in a new Indie comedy as a wonderfully delusional character. Needless to say I was petrified! Andy’s comedy chops are spot on! He has been guiding me with such care and precision, unearthing some delightful qualities of this character and helping me find her voice. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone! " Read more

Tatiana A. says, "I first met David Anthony when I was eleven years old through McCoy Rigby Musical Theatre Conservatory where he was music directing multiple shows during their summer stock season. I then went on to continue taking classes from David through the McCoy Rigby Conservatory and through MTU – Musical Theatre University. Shortly there after, I started to take private voice lessons with him. I have been training with David for almost 10 years now and he has had a huge impact on my life. He has acted as my teacher and mentor and he has inspired me to do things I did not think were possible. Because of David my vocal control and technique have grown leaps and bounds throughout the years I have trained with him. He has such a wonderful way of communicating with each student. He understands my strengths and weaknesses and works with both sides to make me a better performer. David has given me the confidence to walk into a room and know I am going to nail any audition because of his training. Not only have I looked to him for vocal technique, but he has also made me a better actress as well. He has taught me to allow myself to be vulnerable and know that I am always enough. Without David Anthony I would not be the confident performer I am today. I constantly look forward to voice lessons with him because he always pushes me and challenges me beyond anything I could ever imagine. I am so grateful for him and everything he has done for me I could never thank him enough for the amazing influence he has had on my life." Read more

Your Acting Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do acting classes cost?

Acting classes cost $25 to $65 per hour on average for group classes or $50 to $150+ per hour to hire a private acting coach. Prices vary depending on where you live and the instructor's experience and reputation. Acting studios that offer ongoing weekly classes typically charge $150 to $350 per month.

Acting courses and workshops can cost as little as $200 to as much as $2,800+, depending on the content, number of sessions, and the instructor's demand. Some acting workshops are short, 1- or 2-day intensive classes focusing on one aspect of the industry, while other programs last 4 to 8 weeks and cover several topics, methods, and techniques.

Most studios offer a free trial class so you can get a feel for the teaching style and decide if it's right for you.

Are online acting classes worth it?

Online acting classes are worth it if you want to pursue acting and are unable to attend acting classes in person. With online video calling platforms like Zoom and Skype, you can now study acting with the best in the industry from the comfort of your own home! Many reputable acting coaches—including those right here on Lessons—now offer online acting classes and teach the same methods and techniques that they teach in the studio.

Do you need acting classes to become an actor?

You technically don't need acting classes to become an actor. However, acting classes can help you gain confidence, learn new methods and techniques, analyze scenes and scripts, and build new industry connections and relationships. Acting classes can also teach you about the business side of acting, which is as important as acting itself.

How long do acting classes take?

Acting class length varies depending on the studio and the type of class. Some studios have 2-hour classes, while others have classes lasting 3 to 5 hours. Depending on the location, acting classes may be offered in several formats, such as ongoing weekly classes, weekend intensive workshops, and training programs that can run anywhere from 2 to 8+ weeks.

What skills do you need to be an actor?

While the necessary skillset varies depending on the type of acting you pursue (think Broadway theater vs. TV commercials vs. film), all actors need a broad range of skills to portray the expressions and emotions of a character so effectively that they temporarily transport the audience to a world where the actor is indeed that character. This often involves:

  • Memorizing lines and stage cues
  • Analyzing scripts and scenes
  • Developing a character's emotions and physical expressions
  • Working with other actors, directors, and production crews
  • Adapting to unexpected changes and situations
  • Speaking clearly and adjusting one's voice to align with the character
  • Learning and developing different acting methods and techniques
  • Being comfortable in front of an audience or camera

I'm a 74 year old retired man. I have always loved acting but have had some minor challenges due to bad eye sight and I'm not that computer savvy. Jim helped me learn how to use an I-pad my grand daughter gave me to help me expand fonts to read scripts. Though I'm only doing this so far for a hobby, I can see huge improvement in my ability to memorize scripts and act convincingly. Jim encouraged me to audition for the community senior center's drama club. I couldn't believe it I got right in and enjoying meeting new people (I'm widowed). Jim has been a Godsend. I'm finding new joy and I'm enjoying seeing local theatre productions. I appreciate his kind, patient, and professional matter. Acting lessons with Jim is what got me through the horrible isolation during Covid quarantine. He is also incredibly knowledgable on health such as veganism, breathing/meditation and is encouraging me to get into a healthier lifestyle. My voice/sinuses improved after giving up dairy. I used to get chronic sinusitis. So I feel acting has been beneficial to my overall health. Though Jim is pricier than other teachers in the area... I believe you pay for what you get. The extra money I pay is well worth it. The two other acting coaches I used before Jim...were mediocre and treated me like an invalid. Jim continues to inspire me to be the best I can be in all areas of my life. I consider him a good friend and he is one of the best educators out there.

I had an incredible experience with David Tom as my acting teacher. He coached me through and taped my auditions, and was instrumental in significantly enhancing the quality of the work I submitted to casting directors. What I truly appreciated was his approach to the method, which not only improved my performances but also deepened my understanding of the craft. David's resume, experience, dedication, and insight make him an exceptional mentor for any aspiring actor.

“I have trained with many voice teachers in both Los Angeles and New York City and I can honestly say David Anthony is one in a million! As a vocal coach David is committed to not only your vocal progression but your overall success and you are Undoubtably getting more than you’re paying for. David is excellent in providing technical training but you also get a teacher who can really help you develop as an overall performer. He has a keen ability to isolate your weaknesses and help correct them while reenforcing your strengths and helping you capitalize on them. With David as my coach I was able to get into OCHSA (a competitive performing arts high school) and The Young Americans (international performing group). Thanks to David, who also coached me for my college auditions, I am now a senior at New York University Tisch Drama. Thank you david for transforming me into the performer I never thought I could be.”

Jim O'Brian is the best. He taught me everything I needed to know about how to do a self taped audition and how to go about getting a reel made and coaching on the proper way to do taped auditions. Thanks to his help and guidance I am feeling very confident heading into my next audition. Jim is very knowledgeable and does and excellent job in explaining and answering any and all questions or concerns about how to get ahead in the acting community.

Ms. Sousa is really nice. The first time we met was in my class LA AllStars program. She made me feel very comfortable even though I was camera shy. She was organized and had a plan for each class lesson and I learned alot. After I graduated I am now studying film studies at Santa Monica College and will transfer to USC -- i hope. :)
