Al is Director of Junior Programs at Alamaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC) San Jose, California and co-founder of VANGUARD, a high performance training center patterned after Sanchez-Casals Academy in Spain. At AVAC Al implemented and overseas the USTA 12 and under program featuring the USTA’s RED. ORANGE, and GREEN ball approach. He formed and captained 10-18 Yr USTA JTT teams and took them to Sectionals in Fresno, CA. He leads adult beginner thru advanced clinics, serve clinics, tournament prep for juniors, and Cardio Tennis. Previously at San Jose Swim and Racquet Club under Ken Dehart and Almaden Golf and Country Club under Nancy Ghantous, he developed and expanded the Junior programs as well as conducted Adult clinics and individual coaching.
Background – first strokes in Innsbruck, Austria on clay courts. Early days in Chicago, IL in various junior programs. Trained under Alan Carvell, Vic Braden, Tony Proden, Nick Bolliteri, Ken Dehart, as well as other PRO’s. Played for the University of Illinois and competed on the U of I Gymnastics Team. Al also is a Level III PSIA Certified Ski instructor and trainer at Sugar Bowl, Norden, CA.
