Daniel B. says, "Jacob is awesome! I have wanted to dive into jazz and this guy just gets it. He's super encouraging and actually makes it fun. I'm not just mindlessly pressing keys or following tutorials, I'm actually getting to learn about how music works. While our curriculum is focused on jazz, Jacob is never shy about teaching me the occasional pop tune that I want to learn. Most folks think you have to start playing an instrument as a youngster, but I'm an adult with a job and a family, and I can't believe how much I've progressed in such a short time. If you're looking for a piano teacher, this is the guy." Read more

Hello, Thank you for contacting me. I am a session bassist/guitarist who graduated B.M. from Berklee College of Music in Boston. I have been an instructor over 20 years, and have been taught bass, guitar and ukulele in multiple settings (private lessons, group classes in elementary schools, and college level band classes) My teaching style is very relaxed. I do not want to rush my students. I want to play tunes together, talk about how they practiced and what was difficult, answering questions until they make sense. Then I will give my students very specific homework to work on. I believe that if I ask them to work on something they do not...

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Within ONE lesson, Howard could pinpoint EXACTLY what my trouble areas are, and not only is he able to articulate a very clear plan for dealing with those, but he has also helped me with the burdening amount of pain that plagues my joints and muscles when I play something technically demanding! Furthermore, he is very focused, understanding, knowledgeable and gentle! After having many verbally.... difficult teachers whose teaching involved quite a bit of negative reinforcement, it is an absolute pleasure and an eye opening experience to have a patient, understanding teacher. Some people may learn quite well in that fashion, and there was a period of time when I actually believed, or rather was brainwashed into thinking that being verbally berated would serve as motivation. But now I see quite clearly that is not the case: I learn a lot better and I am more motivated to practice when I find it a pleasure to go to my piano lessons! Thank you, Howard for all your dedication, patience and knowledge!

Daniel Lessner is undoubtedly the best music teacher I have ever had. I have been a pianist for more than 20 years and have been studying with Daniel for the last 4. His passion for the piano is unmatched and infectious. His teaching style is clear, focused, and highly practical. He explains not only the technical aspects of each piano piece, but also the musical aspects and the composer's intentions. With his guidance I've been able to learn pieces such as Rachmaninoff Concerto 2 and Chopin Ballades 1, 2, and 3. I highly recommend Daniel as a teacher to pianists of any level, and especially those who are looking to elevate their piano playing to the next level.

I was immediately impressed by the Simply Music method because it instills a joy and love of music first, before the student learns to read music. At her first lesson my daughter could play a song and every week after she learned a new song and was encouraged to sing along if there were lyrics. I was also pleased with the composition assignments where they could blend notes or patterns from songs they already know. This really expands it beyond playing set notes - it encourages creativity and the reward of using imagination to come up with something both familiar and original. My daughter now has a large repertoire of songs she can play ranging in styles from blues to lullabyes. I’m absolutely amazed by her progress!! And Ms. Nicole is absolutely the perfect teacher!! She is experienced, kind, supportive, and keeps the students focused on progress. I couldn’t ask for a better fit for my daughter. I don’t want my daughter to play Carnegie Hall - I want her to develop a love of music and I’m so deeply impressed by how much she’s accomplished in less than two years. I credit the method and Ms Nicole’s dedicated teaching style.
