Devin S. says, "Mary manages to combine sincerity and support with a great musical education. I thought that learning piano would be frustrating and stressful, but thankfully Mary is adept at making you feel at ease in front of an instrument that I personally had hardly ever touched before, let alone could play. For children and adults alike, Northwest Music Studio is just great. I never expected to enjoy music lessons as much as I am." Read more

Jeffrey E. says, "Our daughter has been taking lessons from Sally Sansbury for nearly seven years. She started as a beginner, and she can now play intermediate pieces from RCM Level 6. Sally is a very good teacher who encourages her students to not only play with technical proficiency but also musically. She continually challenges her students to play more advanced pieces of music; however, she is very patient with her students, and she meets them where they are at in their abilities; though she challenges them, she does not push them to advance faster than they are able. Sally is good at observing and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of her students; she will spend more time working with the students to master the elements of technique in which they are weak, and she will spend a little time refining the areas where they are strong. She encourages good site reading, ear training, theory, and memorization skills. Sally also nurtures a sense of appreciation for different musical styles and genres. She encourages her students to not only be good players but also good listeners. Our daughter looks up to Sally not only as a teacher but as a mentor. She values Sally’s thoughts on music and musicianship, and she is increasingly eager to try new music simply because Sally suggested it. Our daughter loves to play the piano and our house is full of music every day, and we attribute much of that blessing to the masterful way in which Sally has guided and shaped our daughter’s skill in playing the piano and her appreciation of music." After studying piano for years, in my youth, I taught myself guitar and ended up the lead singer and rhythm guitar player in a local pop cover band. I loved it! and had a great time. I look forward to sharing my expertise and experience with beginning music students in a way that gets them playing the music they love as soon as possible. I love watching someone grow from barely being able to pic the strings or use their fingers on a keyboard to playing songs they love and developing their musicianship to the highest levels possible. In life, happiness equals progress, and with commitment, anyone can make major progress in becoming the musicia...

Your Online Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do online piano lessons cost near me?

Online piano lessons typically cost $35 to $70 per hour. The biggest benefit of online piano lessons is being able to learn from anywhere in the world with a fast Internet connection. Virtual learning is especially helpful to access more piano teachers when you live in a remote location.

Are online piano classes good and effective?

Online piano classes are good and effective for learning the basics through personalized instructions, when you have a private and live instructor. Pre-recorded piano classes online are less effective because they don't give customized feedback on your progress.

You can learn to play piano with online lessons, especially if you have an experienced teacher and practice regularly.

How do online piano lessons work?

Online piano lessons work by using a private meeting through a video-conference app or video chat. Make sure that you choose a place with a good Internet connection, a strong microphone, full lighting, a webcam, and a room without background noise.

During online piano lessons, you can get:

  • Screensharing to see the teacher's notes written on sheet music
  • Files and study materials emailed from the teacher for you to discuss together
  • Weekly activities to practice in various apps

How do I find the best online piano lessons?

Find online piano lessons offered by private tutors by comparing the listings here on the Lessons website. You can also check your local music schools to see if they offer virtual lessons online as well or know of other freelance musicians in your neighborhood.

Before you decide on a piano teacher who lives nearby, remember to:

  • Get at least 3 different prices for piano lessons to compare.
  • Check what people are saying about them on websites like Lessons and Google.
  • Chat with the references list of students they have taught recently.
  • Ask other parents if their children learned well with this teacher.
  • Make sure to get a written agreement and a lesson plan before the first class.
  • Don't pay for a month's worth of lessons until you've had your first ones and are sure the teacher is right for you.

What questions do I ask when choosing an online piano teacher?

When you're looking for an online piano teacher, consider asking them:

  • How long have you been teaching piano online?
  • What formal music education do you have?
  • What age range do you usually teach online?
  • Do you offer a trial lesson for free or at a reduced cost for online students?
  • If I don't have a piano at home, what kind of keyboard would you suggest?
  • How much should I practice on my own between our online lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and what is their cost?
  • Do you assign homework or songs to memorize after each class?
  • Can you tailor your online-teaching approach to fit my needs?
  • What materials do I need to have on hand for our online lessons?
  • How many different genres of piano music can you teach in an online format?
  • Can I get a digital copy of our agreement and the payment terms?
  • What is your policy for cancelling an online lesson?
  • Will I have the chance to choose some of my own favorite songs to learn during online lessons?

We have known Dr. Sansbury for many years. When my older son was 7 years old, his piano teacher moved to another state. She recommended Dr. Sansbury to us. Now my older son is 14 years old. My younger son started his piano lesson with her when he was 5 years old and he is 9 now. She only raised the tuition one time during so many years. She can taught very advanced level piano. On the other hand, she is very patient with little kids too. My kids like her and they are very comfortable to ask questions if they have any. She also recommended different piano performance activities to them and let them choose what they like to get involved in. As a parent, I feel I may freely communicate with her about any issue.
