Liam K. says, "I've been taking remote lessons with Frankie for three years now, after a chance meeting at the Deer Head Inn. His knowledge and skills set is expansive and his teaching has been nothing short of transformative. Frankie has a remarkable ability to fill in the gaps that traditional music academia left behind, especially when it comes to jazz theory and improvisation. His tailored approach and consistent encouragement have taken my playing to a whole new level and kept my passion for learning alive. Highly recommended!" Read more

Belinda B. says, "I have been with ASMM for a few years now. One of the best things I love about taking lessons with Artelia is her patience. Her ability to explain things in a way that I can understand it is an absolute gift. I always enjoy learning the material she presents and the lessons are always so intriguing and interesting. She is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches and that is evident as she's teaching. She makes sure you know the fundamentals first and build from there. I absolutely love my lessons and encourage anyone looking for a piano teacher to check her out! You will not be disappointed. BBrown" Read more

Normalyn N. says, "My daughter started taking ukulele lessons with Eric on Zoom during the spring of the pandemic. At 10-years-old, she was the youngest and only child in a beginners group ukulele class of adults. But she held her own and with Eric's coaching, she was able to learn to play fairly quickly. It was great for her to be able to learn an instrument and have a creative outlet during that tough time of quarantine. It also sparked the beginning of her love for music that has continued to grow now as she is in her teen years. As she got older, she transitioned from ukulele lessons to private guitar (both acoustic and electric) as well as piano lessons. Through the years she has learned so much from Eric. She went from a kid with no musical background to reading music fluently, studying music theory, playing four instruments, and performing guitar solos at school concerts. It's amazing how much she was able to learn through her weekly virtual lessons with Eric. He is an amazing music teacher and great with kids. He is patient, encouraging, and able to deliver instruction in a way that makes it easy and enjoyable to learn. I would highly recommend Eric to anyone looking for a music teacher for their young kids or teens." Read more

Helen F. says, "Eric taught me and both of my children, and I had the opportunity to see his successes with other children at recitals. All his students don't just like him--- they adore him , and it is well-earned. He is professional, structured, always encouraging and kind, with a wonderful sense of humor and intuitive sense of appropriate expectations. His dedication to learning his own repertoire has enabled him to easily solve students' technical problems and share the tools to become autodidactic. But ultimately his raison d'etre as a teacher is to develop in his students their greatest individual abilities to express their love for and understanding of music. " Read more

Your Online Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do online piano lessons cost near me?

Online piano lessons typically cost $35 to $70 per hour. The biggest benefit of online piano lessons is being able to learn from anywhere in the world with a fast Internet connection. Virtual learning is especially helpful to access more piano teachers when you live in a remote location.

Are online piano classes good and effective?

Online piano classes are good and effective for learning the basics through personalized instructions, when you have a private and live instructor. Pre-recorded piano classes online are less effective because they don't give customized feedback on your progress.

You can learn to play piano with online lessons, especially if you have an experienced teacher and practice regularly.

How do online piano lessons work?

Online piano lessons work by using a private meeting through a video-conference app or video chat. Make sure that you choose a place with a good Internet connection, a strong microphone, full lighting, a webcam, and a room without background noise.

During online piano lessons, you can get:

  • Screensharing to see the teacher's notes written on sheet music
  • Files and study materials emailed from the teacher for you to discuss together
  • Weekly activities to practice in various apps

How do I find the best online piano lessons?

Find online piano lessons offered by private tutors by comparing the listings here on the Lessons website. You can also check your local music schools to see if they offer virtual lessons online as well or know of other freelance musicians in your neighborhood.

Before you decide on a piano teacher who lives nearby, remember to:

  • Get at least 3 different prices for piano lessons to compare.
  • Check what people are saying about them on websites like Lessons and Google.
  • Chat with the references list of students they have taught recently.
  • Ask other parents if their children learned well with this teacher.
  • Make sure to get a written agreement and a lesson plan before the first class.
  • Don't pay for a month's worth of lessons until you've had your first ones and are sure the teacher is right for you.

What questions do I ask when choosing an online piano teacher?

When you're looking for an online piano teacher, consider asking them:

  • How long have you been teaching piano online?
  • What formal music education do you have?
  • What age range do you usually teach online?
  • Do you offer a trial lesson for free or at a reduced cost for online students?
  • If I don't have a piano at home, what kind of keyboard would you suggest?
  • How much should I practice on my own between our online lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and what is their cost?
  • Do you assign homework or songs to memorize after each class?
  • Can you tailor your online-teaching approach to fit my needs?
  • What materials do I need to have on hand for our online lessons?
  • How many different genres of piano music can you teach in an online format?
  • Can I get a digital copy of our agreement and the payment terms?
  • What is your policy for cancelling an online lesson?
  • Will I have the chance to choose some of my own favorite songs to learn during online lessons?

Been working with Frankie for a bit more than a year now and I have never worked with another piano teacher that was so responsive and willing to structure lessons based on my individual music goals. I do music production and songwriting so Frankie has helped me take my understanding of music theory and apply it to my work and practices. He designs specific exercises to work through between lessons so that I can continue my studies when I have time and then review when I'm back in a lessons. Would recommend to anybody, beginner or advanced. Frankie is a great paino teacher who truly knows what he is talking about.

I wanted to learn how to sing and take care of my voice. Someone told me about how amazing Jessie Frye was as a voice teacher so I signed on as her student about two years ago and I can vouch that she is a wonderful teacher! She has patience I wouldn't have expected and she stays on task until we accomplish the goal. My lessons with Jessie are a treat to myself to accomplish a musical talent I was uncertain about. With her as a teacher I truly believe the sky is the limit! Thank you Jessie for sharing your incredible talents through teaching! S Mayeux
