About

I start with where the student is and bring out what is unique and powerful in their personality and talent. I teach them to approach the work with courage and passion, helping to guide them through their career from the beginning to their first major success.

I enjoy and excel in helping my students discover who they are as artists and what direction they want to take in their career.

My whole experience has been fantastic! I was nervous starting out since I haven’t had any prior acting experience. Brian quickly put my nerves at ease and improved my understanding and acting ability. I feel fortunate to have found such a wonderful instructor.

Working with Brian Powell is a sheer joy! His energy, intensity and a sense of play opened up doors into my own, surprisingly new, potentials as an actor. Brians passion for dignity revealed to me the importance of vulnerability and centeredness on stage, on camera, and most importantly, in life.

Brian Powell is a teacher who understands the language of an Actor. He’s kind & encouraging, and able to distill ideas into an “active” choice for the Actor. I’ve been to NYU, studied with Stella Adler, Alfred Molina & The Groundlings and he’s pushed me to places I’ve never gotten to before. He is a coach and a teacher; a director and an actor. He understands that the body needs to be connected to the brain, that they work in tandem on stage. He encourages a mixture of instinct and technique. He is a gifted artist who I will continue to work with.

Brian is the kind of director we all want to work with. As an actor, he has the ability and depth of dynamics to go from gentle poignancy to intense frothing frenzy all the while maintaining complete sincerity. As a director/teacher, he combines his decades of experience, his wisdom of all styles of theatricality and his gregarious ability to instantly find the actors unique inner qualities and inspire everyone around him to gleefully elevate their performance. Jump at the opportunity to work with him. He will release your true potential and connect you to inner emotional places that you didnt know existed.

    Frequently asked questions

I start with where the student is and work through character development and emotional connection to the work. Scene study and improv provide the foundation working from a number of proven methods as well as finding what works for each student individually.

I have a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and over thirty years of experience as an actor, teacher, director, producer and writer in the theatre, film and television industry. I have worked with John Cusack, Tim Robbins, Jack Black, Minnie Driver, Joan Cusack, and many others. I have experience on both sides of the camera and know what it takes to work professionally in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

    60 per hour.
I began teaching in Chicago while working with The Piven Theatre Workshop and John Cusack's theatre company, New Crime productions.
I have taught students all over the country from young aspiring college and graduate students to adults who have made a career for themselves in theatre, film and television.
Make sure they have legitimate expertise on stage, screen and television. That they know the industry on both side of the camera and have worked with talent that are known in the industry and to the public at large.
All you need is the impulse and the desire to explore the art of acting. Take the next step. Call the person you feel may be right for you and have a conversation. Follow you instincts, take the next step and begin your acting adventure.
