Short Bio
Socrates Alafouzos is a film and theater director, actor, screenwriter, and educator with a prolific career that spans over 30 years. His extensive and diverse body of work has earned him international recognition and numerous accolades for his accomplishments as a director, screenwriter, and performer.
Alafouzos balances his creative endeavors with a strong commitment to education. He firmly believes that “Knowledge is power. Knowledge shared is power multiplied.” To put this belief into practice, he actively teaches in academic settings, shaping and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers and performing artists.
ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS
Chapman University, California
- He was honored to be appointed as a Presidential Fellow in Greek Theater. (Jan 2022-June 2023)
- Developed a new course based on his research on Sophocles' "Antigone" and taught it for two semesters in the Honors Department.
- Taught a course on Theater Directing and directed the production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” for the Department of Theater.
- Taught Advanced Directing Performance Techniques for the Film Department.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
1991–94 Receives Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. During this time he is admitted to the institution’s elite Master Class directed by director and teacher Milton Katselas.
Concurrently attends film-directing seminars at the American Film Institute.
1987 Begins ongoing study of still photography with Andreas Smaragdis, one of Greece’s most prominent photographers
1987-88 Studies film directing at Hatzikou Film School in Athens.
1983-87 Dance Studies at Cay Holden Dance Academy (Stage-Jazz-Tap dancing)
1982-85 Studies at and graduates from the Professional Acting School of Athens.
How did you get started teaching?
2010 to present: Private coaching and actors' life coaching since 2010.
2014: Conducted two professional seminars on filmmaking and acting in Athens, Greece, under the auspices of the European Independent Film Festival.
2013-14: Gave a series of acting and self-improvement seminars under the titular theme "Acting and Career" at the Michael Cacoyiannis Foundation in Athens, Greece.
2013: Creative discussions with the audience and gave inspirational speeches after the screenings of short film Little King at the Michael Cacoyiannis Foundation in Athens, Greece.
2010-11 Taught Acting and Self-concept through Creative Drama at the Theater of Changes in Athens, Greece.
