About
I have over 20 years of teaching experience in both private and classroom settings. I am new to Lessons.com however you can visit my website, www.joannamalfatti.com for student reviews. I have a BFA and MFA in music from California Institute of the Arts where I was immersed in a variety of musical styles, including rock, pop, R&B, jazz, West African and Afro-Cuban music. I provide a fun, positive learning environment while also challenging students to reach their potential. Lessons are tailored to fit each student's individual needs and goals. Additionally, students gain skills that reach beyond drumming such as self- confidence, mindfulness, focus, how to set and attain goals and how to overcome negative thinking/behavior that impedes on one's success.
I provide both drumset and hand drum lessons. Lesson curriculum for drumset lessons include reading music (for both snare drum and drumset), rudiments/rolls, development of coordination, technique, playing along to music, including understanding song structure/form, time keeping in various musical styles such as rock, funk, jazz, etc., drum fills, soloing, creative development and listening skills.
Lesson curriculum for hand drum lessons include learning how to attain the various sounds of your specific drum, traditional patterns, soloing, technique, creative development, listening skills, cultural context and how to play with other interlocking drum patterns.

It gives me great pleasure to share my love of music with others and to see students grow in their musical development. When a student lights up after playing their favorite song, I'm thrilled that I could help bring that experience to fruition.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
On our first session, I ask a few questions to see what goals you may have, what prior experience you might have, who your favorite band is, ECT. I always try to get you playing to a song on the first day, even if you are an absolute beginner!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing drums for 30 years, with a BFA and MFA in music from California Institute of the Arts.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are typically 30 minutes in length, one time per week, at a rate of $35 per lesson. You will be charged $35 for your first lesson. If you decide you would like to continue, lessons are charged on a monthly basis: $140 for months with four weeks, $175 for months with 5 weeks. New students receive the fifth lesson free with the purchase of four lessons. Payments can be made by cash, check, or electronically through Zelle.
How did you get started teaching?
My first introduction to teaching was in high school, coaching students who needed extra work and teaching a student privately who wanted to learn drum set. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience teaching and when I started college, I began teaching through an award winning program, California Arts Partnership.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students ranging in ages from 3-65. I have worked with a number of special needs children. Some of my students are complete beginners, others are musicians looking to improve their skills. Some are high school students looking to major in music once they attend college.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently a student was moving and needed to prepare an audition for his new arts high school. Over the course of about 8 weeks, we worked very hard to learn the advanced audition material. He was able to play for his new high school teacher online and was successfully placed in a number of ensembles.
