Susan W. says, "“My Best Piano Teacher Ever” Matt is a Phenomenal Jazz Piano Player, Teacher, and Mentor. He is a superb listener and is excellent with evaluating “where you’re at” and taking you, “where you want to go.” He is positive, encouraging and provides challenges to optimize your musical growth and potential. It’s all about “The Journey” – he will say. And I’m fortunate to have him on mine. In 2 years, he has taken me from crayons to perfume! Musically speaking, from Basic Triads to Buttery Jazz Notes / Chords; to attending Jazz Sessions and becoming involved with Local Jazz workshops to gain experience with learning how to play in a combo and improve my improvisational skills - which is my goal. However, I would never have done it, if it wasn’t for Matt motivating me to “Just go, Listen and Participate.” I’m still working on the participation piece due to my own performance anxiety, but am confident that I will get there –with Matt’s encouragement and exceptional teaching style. If your serious about learning Jazz Piano – Matt should be “Your Teacher!” You won’t regret it! Suzy" Read more

Carla G. says, "As an adult beginner learning piano, I assumed learning in person would be the more proper way. However, I have to say after just a few lessons with Carlos, I feel like he’s in the room with me and I’m so happy I tried the online lessons with him! You really don’t need in person lessons after trying his method of teaching where he sets up a zoom link and I simply login from my iPhone and also my iPad showing him my keyboard so he sees my hands and then he shows his screen a lot too. Then we will be working off of the same piano book so half the time I don’t need to look at my cameras. Not only is Carlos an amazing instructor, he has such an amazing personality, so our lessons are both educational and fun at the same time! I can’t think of a better more engaging way to learn! Carlos really knows what he’s talking about and he has a great way of correcting me and helping me learn from mistakes until I get it right. I feel very comfortable taking lessons with him and always look forward to the next one! I would give him 100 stars if I could! Thank you Carlos!!! :)" Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Working with Carlos has been an awesome experience. His Beatkey's 12-week program pushed me to create new connections in my music theory, piano playing, and music production. If you're an artist who wants to learn how to create your own instrumentals and want a tailored experience to your learning style and schedule, Carlos is your guy! Fantastic educator, flexible in scheduling, and an awesome communicator! highly recommended.
