About
I have been playing fiddle and mandolin for over 50 years. I started violin lessons when I was in school, and began studying classical music. I soon discovered other styles of music, as well, and took a little detour from the classical world into the world of Bluegrass music and folk music. That led me to a professional career in Bluegrass and Country music, and also lead me to explore many other styles of music, including jazz and swing, Cajun and Zydeco music, Italian mandolin music, Klezmer music, and more.
I teach all these styles to my students. I have taught very young kids and very old adults, as long as the interest and the passion is there. I work a lot with beginners, but sometimes I'll take some very advanced students and work on specific topics, such as fiddle contest preparation or music theory or improvisation skills.
I enjoy teaching and I've had many successful students who have gone on to pursue musical careers, or higher education at various music schools.
I live in Santa Rosa, where I perform with several groups, including the Hot Frittatas (European cafe music), the Wild Catahoulas (Cajun/Zydeco), the Gravenstein Mandolin Ensemble (classical and Italian and Brazilian music), and others. I'm also on the Board of our local district of the California Old Time Fiddlers Association. And I write a column for The Fiddler Magazine.
